ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is reportedly going to receive a season 5 renewal. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been doing quite well for itself. The show may focus on the behind-the-scenes heroes of the Marvel world, but being the studio's only current primetime venture has given it a pretty big spotlight.

Agents follows the adventures of characters who work for secret intelligence organization S.H.I.E.L.D. The show started off as a spinoff of the MCU but has since grown into its own. Agents both maintains continuity with the MCU and continues to break new ground exploring ideas and characters that have yet to make it to the big screen. Season 4 saw the introduction of Marvel comics mainstays like Ghost Rider, LMDs (life model decoys which are basically androids), and the creation of the digital alternate reality The Framework.

Fans who are eager to see what other Marvel concepts Agents will bring to the table will be pleased to hear that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is reportedly being renewed for a fifth season. Nellie Andreeva at Deadline said Agents, "which serves as a solid marketing platform for the Disney-owned Marvel, also is getting renewed I hear." To be clear, the only shows that ABC has officially renewed are Grey’s Anatomy, ScandalHow To Get Away With Murder and half hour comedy The Middle. However, fans should not be too worried.

An official announcement from ABC will likely come along soon with the network's upfronts presentation scheduled for mid-May given the host of other reasons the network has for renewing. ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey said earlier this year that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 is its “strongest” creatively, and is hoping to air season 5 alongside the network’s upcoming Inhumans miniseries. Critics agree with Dungey about the creative aspect as season 4 currently stands at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

On top of this, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has expressed interest in crossing over Marvel TV and movies at some point in the future, and Inhumans showrunner Scott Buck hinted that his show (airing Fall) may share a connection with Agents.

Though fans may have had some reason to worry given Agents' ratings drop this season (the fourth episode reportedly had the lowest ratings of the series), the series continues to be a steady draw for ABC even if it's not a powerhouse. There's also been a definite focus on expanding Marvel TV, especially on Netflix, with the addition of The Punisher, while other ABC series Agent Carter was cancelled and Marvel's Most Wanted wasn't picked up.

Even though this is not a confirmed renewal, given the source, the above mentioned reasons and the fact the show has seen an increase in popularity it seems safe to rejoice. The second to last episode of Agents airs this Tuesday, so if you're still waiting on an official announcement, expect it soon.
