WARNING: This post contains MAJOR Spoilers for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premiere.
In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premiere, one of the team members is missing: Leo Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) – so we break down where he is. After an exciting fourth season of the flagship Marvel TV series, which included the introduction of Ghost Rider as well as the virtual reality called the Framework, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. heads to space in its season 5 premiere. Fans have speculated about what exactly the space setting will mean for Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), and the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, with some positing it would mark the debut of SWORD in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, ever since Marvel TV and ABC began to promote the show's fifth season, we've learned more and more about what to expect from the series' latest outing. Although footage of the season 5 premiere left us with more questions about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. than answers, the premiere was bound to offer some insight into where the agents are in space. But, while the two-hour premiere offered viewers some answers about the majority of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team, there's still one member missing since Fitz wasn't in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premiere. So where was he?
Well, as revealed at the end of the first hour of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s two-hour premiere, the majority of the team - Coulson, Daisy, Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), May (Ming-Na Wen), Mack (Henry Simmons), and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) - are trapped in the future after traveling through a Kree monolith. However, one member of the team wasn't abducted from the diner by the mysterious alien wearing a human skinsuit, and Daisy later confirms that teammate didn't go through the monolith with the rest of them. That teammate is, of course, Fitz. While we may not know exactly where Fitz is, we do know when he is. He's still in the present, the time period from which the rest of the team was abducted.
At the end of the first hour of the premiere, Mack discovers a message from Fitz on the back of the postcard the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents discovered on the "true believer" Virgil (Deniz Akdeniz). It reads, "Working on it. - Fitz" and indicates the missing S.H.I.E.L.D. agent knows where his teammates were sent, and is working on a way to bring them home. Of course, since we don't see Fitz at all during the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premiere, we don't know where exactly he is or who he's working with - if anyone - to bring Coulson and the team home, but we can speculate.
At the end of season 4, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team was expecting to be arrested due to the public appearance of their conflict with the Life-Model Decoys, which included the body of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Jeffrey Mace being discovered without explanation after he died in the Framework. Since all the other most prominent remaining members of S.H.I.E.L.D. have suddenly disappeared, it seems unlikely Fitz would be able to rebuild the organization - or, since the others are gone, he actually has an easier time rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. Still, it seems more likely Fitz is working with the aliens who sent Coulson and the rest of the team into the future. Since Fitz was the one to figure out a way to bring Simmons home after she previously traveled through a Kree monolith and wound up on Maveth, it may be that Fitz was purposely held him back to figure out a way to bring the team home.
Ultimately, there's very little we know for sure about Fitz's role in season 5. In the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast photos for this season, Fitz was shown with the rest of the team in some futuristic costume similar to the rest of the group. But after the premiere, we know he isn't in the future - yet. We also know that while he remained in the present, he was working on a way to get rest of the team home. Whether he's successful in doing so, or winds up sending himself to the future, remains to be seen as season 5 unfolds.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 continues next Friday at 9pm on ABC
