'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Mid-Season Premiere Teaser: Something's Wrong with Skye

Agents of SHIELD mid-season premiere trailer

[SPOILERS for the first half of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two ahead.]

With Agent Carter about to enter the back half of its eight episode run, ABC is starting to get viewers back in the groove of the network's inaugural Marvel series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and one of the ways it's doing that is with a brand new promo for this March's mid-season premiere.

Returning March 3rd to its original Tuesdays at 9 timeslot (to be exact), the new run of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes will address the mid-season finale’s reveal about Skye (Chloe Bennet) being, in reality, the Marvel Comics character, Daisy Johnson a.k.a. Quake. (In case you missed it, read our Inhumans and Terrigenesis Explanation post to better understand what's happening to Skye.)

Agent Carter received better reviews for its premiere episode than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did in 2013, yet Carter has struggled to maintain ratings dominance – case in point, last night’s episode only scored 4.6 million viewers overall with a 1.3 in demo. Should the downtick continue, ABC will surely be anxious to get Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back on the air considering that Team Coulson does maintain a low, but consistent audience that hovers between 4-6 million overall viewers in a given week.

There are a lot of places S.H.I.E.L.D. can go, but it's not clear yet how much lore the series will explore given Marvel’s plan to launch an Inhumans film in 2018. But, with the teaser of Raina (Ruth Negga) now being transformed into some mutated creature along with Skye’s power revelation, it seems a fair guess we can at least expect some solid super-powered fights of good vs. evil in the coming months.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have taken its sweet time to grow, but we can’t argue with the results. The mid-season finale was everything we could have hoped for, and it proved there’s a benefit to the series operating in select runs at a time instead of just stretching 22 episodes out over nine months. With any luck, the series’ audience will continue growing as it heads into the back half of season two and ultimately warrants a season three renewal from ABC.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, March 3rd with 'Aftershocks' at 9/8c on ABC.
