[WARNING: This post will contain SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.]
While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may have been received with lukewarm responses from critics and fans alike in its first season, season 2 has not only turned it into the kind of series audiences were hoping it would be all along, but also has cemented it as an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two-part season 2 finale, "S.O.S.," promises to shake things up for the series in some major ways. But first, the show will tie-in to the events in Marvel's latest film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, in next week's episode titled "The Dirty Half Dozen."
The season is been building toward its finale in this week's episode, with Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Robert Gonzalez (Edward James Olmos) putting aside their differences (for the time being) to try and take down the remnants left from Hydra - not to mention the tension growing over at the Inhumans camp following Lincoln's capture and the fallout with Skye's family. So with many of the characters fractured and Skye torn between her S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhuman families, this season finale might very well live up to its hype.
ABC recently released some new full stills from the next two episodes of the season, the previously mentioned Age of Ultron tie-in, "The Dirty Half Dozen," and the penultimate episode of season 2, "Scars." The images feature the reunion of Coulson's original team, but they also hint at the decision Skye will have to make by the end of the season.
Check them out below:
“The Dirty Half Dozen” – Gonzales and Coulson must find a way to put their differences aside and work together against Hydra, even if it means teaming up with someone they don’t trust, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Tuesday, April 28 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network."
"Scars" - Skye is torn between her loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. and her connection to the Inhumans as tensions rise between the groups -- and Coulson reveals a secret he's been hiding from even those closest to him, on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," TUESDAY, MAY 5 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network."
The season finale of the show is said to feature "shocking sacrifices," and with Coulson's secret possibly being revealed in "Scars" as well as the tenuous partnership between the "real" S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson's team being explored in next week's episode, it'll be interesting to see where this all leads by the time "S.O.S." cuts to black. While most season finales are used to tie up season-long storylines and bridging the gap into the next season, every now and then there comes a finale that completely changes the dynamic of the series. And with everything S.H.I.E.L.D. has going for it, it's possible that might just be the case this time around.
The series has been sitting in a strange position ever since Daredevil premiered on Netflix. With the upcoming Defenders series as well as the recently announced spinoff series focusing on Bobbi & Lance - not to mention the rumored Marvel series also in the works at ABC from 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ripley - the future of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is more unknown than ever. Whether or not Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. capitalizes on that mystery will have to wait to be seen, but for the moment, the show has more momentum behind it than ever.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays @9pm on ABC. Check out a preview of this week's episode below:
