In preparation for the show's series finale this week, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg reflects on Phil Coulson's journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the MCU is full of resurrected characters, Gregg's Coulson is arguably the most notable. He was introduced in Iron Man, the very first MCU movie. After following that up with appearances in Iron Man 2 and Thor, Coulson was murdered by Loki in The Avengers. His death served as the biggest catalyst of the movie, motivating the Avengers to finally work together.

However, Coulson was resurrected not soon after, though only in the world of Marvel TV, as the Avengers still believe Gregg's character to be dead. Gregg has primarily starred as Coulson on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., though he's played different versions of him, as well as Sarge, another character entirely. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had an impressive run, due in large part to Gregg's leadership as Coulson. Despite never becoming a ratings giant, the series has outlasted numerous other Marvel shows and ends with season 7.

In a new video from Marvel Entertainment, Gregg discusses Coulson's journey, both in the Marvel films and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He also speaks more generally about the legacy of the show, including the incredible actors who have been a part of it. Check out the message from Gregg below:

As Gregg mentions in the video, it would have been impossible for viewers to predict Coulson's trajectory in the MCU when they first met him in Iron Man. In addition to his initial resurrection for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson has "died" multiple times since. In fact, Gregg's played a Life Model Decoy version of the character throughout the final season. The actor's message also highlights how impressive the show is despite not having the full force of the MCU behind it. Generally, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had to follow the MCU timeline and reference what happens in the movies, though without making any big changes that would affect the films.

This has put Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a unique position the show has often taken advantage of. For example, the well-received first season was impacted directly by the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, making the show feel like an exciting and important part of the MCU. However, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has done an equally good job working within the bounds of the films, including creating a new timeline this season so as to not disrupt anything on the movie side. While Gregg's video is a wonderful look back at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most important character, it also shows what an anomaly the series is in the world of Marvel.
