Warning: SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5

Lance Hunter returns in an unexpected way in the synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fifth episode of season 5, "Rewind." Most of Coulson and his team are currently stuck in space and the future, but Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) was left alone in the present. The two-hour season premiere of S.H.I.E.L.D. showed audiences what is happening with the rest of the group, and not having Fitz along for the journey isn't on the forefront of their minds as they try to survive their harsh new environment.

However, their sudden abduction from Earth in 2017 should mean Fitz is all alone and left wondering what happened to his friends. It was previously revealed that one of Fitz's pals would be returning to the show during season 5, but it wasn't clear how a disavowed Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) would factor in. Thanks to the synopsis for episode five, we finally have some clues.

ABC released the synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fifth episode of the season, "Rewind," and began to reveal how Hunter gets involved. In what sounds like a very Fitz-heavy episode, the lonely agent will turn to his old friend to try and learn more about the rest of the team's whereabouts.

With the surprising help of Lance Hunter, nothing will stop Fitz from finding the lost team as his incredible journey is revealed, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” FRIDAY, DEC. 22 (9:01-10:01 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie and Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez.

Guest starring are Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, Joel Stoffer as Enoch, Catherine Dent as General Hale, Lola Glaudini as Polly Hinton, Lexy Kolker as Robin Hinton, Zibby Allen as Lt. Evans, Joy Layton as Lt. Lucas, Delpaneaux Wills as forensic officer, Anthony Bless as MP guard and Asante Jones as security guard.

The synopsis alone keys in on an important episode for Fitz, but the cast list is also telling. Blood's return as Hunter is the biggest piece, but the rest of the supporting cast doesn't include anyone in space in the distant future. Instead, a story that requires several military type personnel is what brings Fitz and Hunter together. Since the synopsis classifies the pairing as a surprise, it may be by chance that the two are reunited, but it should provide some fun results regardless of how they find each other.

Hunter was a fan-favorite character during his time on S.H.I.E.L.D. in the second and third seasons. His friendship with Fitz was one of several highlights for the character, but especially his relationship with Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki). She is not expected to return, despite Palicki's interest in doing so. It is not clear how long Hunter is going to be involved during season 5, but it could be a multi-episode arc if Fitz needs more help to bring back his team. Whether it is just an one episode appearance or the beginning of a small stint, the return of Blood is a welcomed one.
