Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 will see the return of Nick Blood as former agent Lance Hunter. The first television offshoot from Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe launched on ABC in the fall of 2013 and the first season was largely hit or miss - that is, until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s tie-in episode with Captain America: The Winter Soldier completely changed the landscape of the show for the better. In season 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued to deal with Hydra and added two characters who quickly became fan-favorites: Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Blood).

In fact, the characters were so popular that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 featured a storyline in which they were disavowed from the organization so that the duo could leave the show in order to headline their own spinoff, titled Marvel's Most Wanted. However, ABC chose not to move forward with Most Wanted, which left the characters of Bobbi and Hunter in the unfortunate position of being disavowed by S.H.I.E.L.D. and seemingly unable to ever return. But, anything is possible in comic book TV shows, and it seems at least one of these characters is returning.

EW is reporting that Blood will reprise his role as Lance Hunter in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, but for how long and the details about his return are being kept under wraps. EW additionally shared a photo of Blood on the set of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., reading a script for the series. Take a look below:

While Hunter's return is no doubt a mystery for fans the puzzle over, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has kept most details about season 5 under wraps. The season 4 finale featured a major cliffhanger with the core S.H.I.E.L.D. team eating in a diner before being taken away by a team of what seemed to be government agents, only for Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) to wake up in a room with a view of outer space.

Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. won't return until Inhumans wraps up its debut season - which will likely be around mid-November - little about the upcoming season is known. Rumors have pointed to the Kree, the alien race that created Inhumans, and the Secret Warriors, Daisy Johnson's (Chloe Bennet) team of Inhumans, returning in season 5, though it remains to be seen if either or both of these reports turn out to be true. One thing we do know is that it's highly unlikely Bobbi Morse will return in season 5 - mainly because Palicki is busy with her new show, Seth MacFarlane's sendup to Star Trek, The Orville.

Still, Hunter's return certainly seems to leave to door open for Bobbi to eventually be brought back into the fold in some way, should Palicki have time to reprise her role. Additionally, Hunter's return will be a welcome one for fans who enjoyed his original turn on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But, it remains to be seen how he comes back and how long he stays, and we'll hopefully get a better idea of those details once we get closer to the premiere date of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5.
