Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 is building to a dramatic climax in the trailer for next week's episode, "The Force of Gravity."
So far, Season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has essentially been a mystery story. The first half-season implied that, somehow, Daisy Johnson's powers will be boosted to the point where she threatens the entire planet. But when S.H.I.E.L.D. returned to their own time, the season began raising other curious possibilities; perhaps Ruby would be the Destroyer of Worlds instead? Or, more recently, would it be Talbot - who does indeed appear to have had a psychotic break as a result of the infusion process?
"The prophecy is true," the trailer cautions, and focuses in on Daisy. The latest episode ended with the comatose Daisy now a prisoner of the Confederacy. Although Talbot is convinced he has the Confederacy in line, the reality is that these dangerous alien beings all have their own agendas. The Kree, of course, are the alien race who actually created the Inhumans millennia ago; it's hardly a surprise to see that the Kree could actually boost Daisy's powers, to the point where she could challenge Talbot. Unfortunately, as the S.H.I.E.L.D. team already know, a power-boost for Daisy could literally shatter the entire world.
Meanwhile, Graviton is growing both increasingly powerful and increasingly unstable. He knows about the threat of Thanos, and he believes himself to be "Earth's Mightiest Hero." In the trailer, Talbot even compares himself to the Avengers, telling his son that he's a superhero now. Unfortunately, the truth is that Talbot is growing increasingly power-hungry. He's no superhero; he's actually a supervillain. Talbot's insane goal, to acquire more Gravitonium and absorb it into himself, could well prove just as much a threat to the world as Daisy's power-up. And all this is happening against the backdrop of Thanos's fateful attack on Earth, with the clock ticking down till the moment of galactic disaster.
The trailer teases that one more plot thread is coming to a head for the season finale, too. The Kree science that resurrected Coulson has been undone, and he's now dying once again. Coulson has been the heart and soul of S.H.I.E.L.D. for five seasons now, and there's no way the team will allow him to die. The trailer closes with a horrified Daisy looking over Coulson's body, desperately appealing to him to "stay with me." The stakes have never been higher for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..
Agents of SHIELD season 5 continues with “The Force of Gravity” May 11 on ABC.
