Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will soon be celebrating its 100th episode, and it sounds as if fans will be in for some surprises. This past summer, word emerged that Disney stepped in to save Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from cancellation. Though the series has been a hit with fans and critics, it hasn't always done well in terms of ratings for ABC. Still, it regularly matches its comic book TV show peers and provides Marvel with a regular series on Disney's flagship network. The show will also soon hit the 100th episode milestone, opening it up for an sizable syndication package.

With Inhumans complete, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is all set to return to ABC next month. While most shows will be preparing for their midseason break, the agents will be heading to space for a whole slew of new adventures. The extended trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 teases that the Kree and other alien threats that will be showing up this season, as the series moves into as-yet unexplained cosmic areas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems, however, that the entire season won't take place in outer space.

Comic Book spoke with Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb and asked what fans can expect in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s 100th episode. Although he couldn't reveal much, Loeb promised something big, while confirming that Coulson and his team will be heading home to Earth around the same time:

"Look, this is not going to come as a surprise to anyone that's ever seen a 100th episode, that there will be a significant event. That's all I can tell you. They gotta get home from space!"

The 100th episode is a big milestone for any show, so it's not shocking to learn that Marvel will treat it like a big deal. Arrow, for example, had its 100th episode during last year's Arrowverse crossover event and used it to bring back a number of characters from the dead for an emotional outing. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has a long and complex history with lots of emotional weight behind its characters. It also has a good chunk of the Marvel comics universe to pull from, so there's no limit to what surprises could be in store for viewers.

Loeb also seems to be indicating that episode 100 will see the S.H.I.E.L.D. team head back home from space. The milestone will be the 12th episode of season 5, putting it right at the halfway point (assuming that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets its regular 22 episode season length). Season 4 did great work dividing its story into 3 separate arcs, so splitting season 5 between space and Earth-based adventures could yield similar returns. With just a few more weeks until the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., more details concerning the new season and the future of the show in general should be arriving soon.
