Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team of loyal agents will continue to battle Hydra's forces when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two picks back up next month. There will also be a number of new faces among the crowd when the show does return, including Blair Underwood as Agent May's ex-husband, Edward James Olmos as a mystery character named Robert Gonzales, and Luke Mitchell as Lincoln: an Inhuman who will help Skye/Daisy (Chloe Bennet) adjust to her newfound powers (and to learn more about the history of their kind).

Meanwhile, there will be more guest star appearances, including from characters who may have ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a part of. One such guest-star will be played by Drea de Matteo, whom Marvel has confirmed will be popping up occasionally during the second half of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two.

De Matteo is a seasoned star of the small screen who has added recurring roles on The Sopranos, Joey, Desperate Housewives and, most recently, Sons of Anarchy to her resume over the years. Marvel, on its official site, has confirmed that de Matteo will be guest-starring on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Karla Faye Gideon: a "Gifted woman with a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D.," who joins forces with Skye's dad, Dr. Calvin Zabo (a character we now know is based on Mr. Hyde from the Marvel comic universe).

Gideon, in the Marvel comics Earth-616 universe, was a regular human who had an abusive husband; because of the latter's behavior, Gideon wound up crossing paths with Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox in the upcoming Daredevil Netflix series). It's certainly possible the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show version of Gideon will also have a connection to The Man Without Fear, as she did in comic book form. After all, with the Daredevil show launching in April, the timing would be just right for that sort of inter-connected storytelling.

Characters such as Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki) have undergone significant changes while jumping from the comic book page to the MCU, so it's certainly possible that de Matteo on S.H.I.E.L.D. will be playing Gideon in name only; after all, we already know she won't be a regular person, but rather a "Gifted" individual (translation: an Inhuman?). Still, if Karla's grudge against S.H.I.E.L.D. has something to do with Matt Murdock, it could have interesting implications for the Daredevil series (like, when it takes place, in relation to the events on S.H.I.E.L.D.).

Speculation aside, we know S.H.I.E.L.D. will continue to build the mythology of the Inhumans in the MCU over the remainder of its second season; including, through the return of Asgardian warrior Sif (Jaimie Alexander), who previously appeared on the show during its freshman season. So, no matter what Karla's deal ends up being, S.H.I.E.L.D. ought to keep on proving its worth as a valuable addition to the Shared Marvel Universe over the episodes ahead.
