Marvel and ABC have released a chilling new promo for the upcoming 100th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The Real Deal." It's hard to believe that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is about to hit the milestone 100th episode mark considering that the series has had a rough go of things in recent seasons.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scored the biggest network drama debut in four years when it first premiered in 2013, but then its ratings sharply declined. However, a smart tie-in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier reinvigorated the show during its first season, and that's what kicked off the narrative that's led the show to where it is today. Since then, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has continually reinvented itself, most recently as a high-concept time-travel story that saw Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team stranded in a dystopian future. They've returned to the past but are now struggling to rewrite the future's history. And things are bound to get worse in the show's upcoming 100th episode, which is evident in its new promo.
ABC released a new promo for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode "The Real Deal" (above). The promo confirms reports that some classic S.H.I.E.L.D. villains will be making their return for the landmark episode, particularly Lash and Hive. Each character posed a very personal threat to the S.H.I.E.L.D. team back in season 3; Lash was actually Agent May's husband, while Hive took possession of the body of Grant Ward. Daisy even wound up under Hive's control for a time.
The new promo also teases some sort of dimensional rift, which could possibly be the cause of the visions Coulson and his team are currently experiencing. Plus, Ghost Rider is also supposed to return for the 100th episode, which fits with the dimensional rift since season 4 saw the Spirit of Vengeance talk about a cosmic war waged across the dimensions. It's possible that whatever the S.H.I.E.L.D. team is experiencing is somehow tied to this inter-dimensional conflict, and that this "war in heaven" is rippling over to the Earth. As Fitz reflects, noting the dimensional tear, the end of the world might have already begun.
Season 4 saw Coulson strike a deal with the devil, allowing the Spirit of Vengeance to briefly possess his body. It was a smart strategy to neutralize Aida, who was corrupted by the power of the Darkhold. But, there was a price; Coulson avoided revealing that cost to his team back in season 4, but it's been confirmed Coulson will finally explain his Ghost Rider deal in "The Real Deal."
It's clear that the 100th episode will be a celebration of everything Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been, and it will draw heavily on plot threads from the last four seasons. At the same time, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team will be dealing with the horror and drama of everything they experienced in the future, as well as Yo-Yo's horrific injury. This will definitely not be an episode to miss.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 continues next Friday March 9 with its 100th episode, “The Real Deal” at 9pm on ABC.
