The end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 left viewers with two very different cliffhangers. The case of terrigen crystals the team fought to contain was spilled into the ocean to become terrigen-laced fish oil capsules capable of triggering a transformation in any unsuspecting supplement-taker who possessed the Inhuman gene. Then Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) - after finally agreeing to go on a date with Fitz - was unceremoniously sucked into the Kree monolith.
While the team was still grappling with the sudden influx of new Inhumans, Simmons' disappearance was quickly addressed. By the end of the second episode "Purpose in the Machine" Fitz had determined that she was transported to another alien world and launched a rescue mission to bring her back. The mission was successful and the portal was destroyed, but details about the alien world have been scarce up until now.
ABC has released new promotional photos (via CBM) for the upcoming “4,722 Hours” an episode that will flashback to the missing gap of time where Simmons struggled to survive on an alien planet. From the look of the photos Simmons finds the remains of the 19th-century group who went through the portal before her, and a few tools to help her make it out alive. Check out all of the photos below.
These images make it clear the episode will be largely Simmons-focused, and will hopefully address not only how she survived for so long, but what causes her to want to return to the alien land. The official episode description reads: "After her dramatic rescue from another planet, Simmons is still reeling from her ordeal and reveals how she had to fight for her life in a harsh new world".
It's feasible that Simmons was not alone on the planet, as her needing to rescue another survivor would explain her insistence on returning. It would also explain her reluctance to discuss her time away with Fitz if the relationship was romantic. Simmons' mysterious circumstances leave plenty of space for theories and conjecture, so hopefully this week's episode answers a few of these lingering questions.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues next Tuesday with ‘4,722 Hours’ at 9pm on ABC. Agent Carter season 2 is expected to air during the mid-season break in early 2016.
