Filming for season 6 of ABC’s Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. just wrapped earlier this month, but an exclusive report suggests that season 7 could begin production as early as February 2019. One of the more popular Marvel spinoffs, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. received renewal for its seventh season back in November.
Premiering in September 2013 and using the success of The Avengers as a launchpad, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the first television series to come directly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show follows a team of elite agents, led by Phil Coulson for the first five seasons, as their global law enforcement agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division) investigates strange occurrences and disruptions. While the team has consisted of Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie (Henry Simmons), and Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) contributing their unique skills at various points, the series undoubtedly owes a good deal of its success to the continuity and connection to the larger MCU created by Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson, who fans had already seen in Iron Man, Thor, and The Avengers. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s historical foe, Hydra, is still a major threat in the series, and season 5 of the show saw the team return from the future to save the world from destruction.
Now, in an exclusive posted on Twitter by Discussing Film, the outlet is claiming that season 7 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is eyeing a February 2019 production start in Los Angeles. This is a welcome announcement to fans since, despite the longevity of the show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been on the bubble in the past when it comes to renewal and production kickoff. Many expected season 5 to be the series’ last, yet season 6 will air in July 2019, capitalizing on the renewed hype that will be created by Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel TV has expanded its empire to include shows on Netflix and Hulu in addition to network television, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. remains its flagship series and most in-demand show. According to Parrot Analytics, it’s Marvel’s strongest TV brand worldwide, even beating out the likes of the much lauded - and recently cancelled - Daredevil series on Netflix.
While season 6 has wrapped and season 7 is expected to be underway shortly, it’ll be interesting to see if the show can maintain its popularity after the departure of Gregg’s Phil Coulson following season 5. A first look at season 6’s new S.H.I.E.L.D. director suggests everything will carry on in a similar fashion, but there are no certainties in the fickle world of television.
