The first trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 5 has finally arrived. ABC initially planned on canceling the series following struggling rating issues throughout its fourth season, but the upper echelon at Disney reportedly demanded the network put out the renewal order, presumably so that they could continue (superficially) connecting the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe to the studio's TV division. However, it's unclear if whether or not all the other MCU shows will eventually connect to one another.

By now, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would already be back on the air, but ABC and Marvel TV opted to air the first (and perhaps only) season of Inhumans first, thereby relegating the upcoming fifth season of Marvel's flagship TV series to debut later during the midseason. However, that hasn't precluded the studio from promoting the series and hyping up the new, space-themed story arc - which will include the Kree, who first appeared at the tail-end of the show's first season - that shocked viewers during last season's finale episode. Marvel TV revealed the first 20 minutes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 5 premiere at New York Comic-Con 2017 last month, packed with action and teases for what's to come. And now, fans can get their first glimpse at some of those teases.

ABC debuted the first promo for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 during the finale for the eight-episode first season of Marvel's Inhumans, teasing the team's new predicament as well as the harrowing new alien threat. A great deal of the trailer comprises of footage from those first 20 minutes shown at NYCC. You can watch the trailer in the section above.

Although Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't the most successful show ABC has in their lineup, it still rakes in devout comic book fans who may not normally tune into the broadcast channel. So, to give S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ratings a fighting chance, the network has moved the series from its traditional Tuesday night slot to Friday nights (taking over Inhumans' slot when its season ends), airing alongside their other sci-fi/fantasy-based series, Once Upon a Time.

Rather than wait until early next year to premiere the episode, though, ABC confirmed last month that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fifth season will bow in early December, giving the network (and audiences) a short recess over the Thanksgiving break after Inhumans' first season concludes. We'll just have to wait and see how the new season performs compared to past seasons.
