Josh Brolin joins Hail Caesar!; Kirsten Wiig sets her directorial debut; Insidious 3 casts its star; Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling may join The Nice Guys; and Fox sets release dates for a slew of upcoming features.
Josh Brolin is set to re-team with Joel and Ethan Coen for Hail Caesar!.
The Coens, of course, directed Brolin in the 2007 hit No Country for Old Men, for which they won a best directing Oscar. Whether this upcoming film will find similar success, both critically and financially, is unclear, but the project's profile continues to grow regardless.
Hail Caesar! stars George Clooney – another frequent Coen collaborator – as a '50s-era Hollywood fixer. Essentially, these fixers would protect the reputations of big name stars by keeping their exploits out of the press. Brolin could be playing one of those stars - he certainly has that old Hollywood look - but as of yet there is no word on his role.
Former SNL cast member Kristen Wiig is ready to try her hand at feature film directing.
Although Wiig will be helming her first feature, she won't be completely alone. Frequent collaborator, and fellow Bridesmaids scribe, Anne Mumolo will assist Wiig with writing and producing, and will co-star in the film.
Stefanie Scott has been cast as the lead in Insidious: Chapter 3.
Although few will know Scott, she can be seen later this year in Blumhouse Production's Jem and the Holograms adaptation. Coincidentally, Blumhouse is also producing Insidious: Chapter 3, so presumably her work on Jem helped Scott land the Insidious gig.
With original Insidious director James Wan now hard at work on Fast & Furious 7, it will be franchise scribe Leigh Whannell who helms this third film. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding this next installment, though, especially with regards to its story. We know the film will incorporate new characters, so Scott's casting at least confirms those details.
Insidious: Chapter 3 hits theaters on April 3, 2015.
Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are in early negotiations to co-star in Shane Black's upcoming film The Nice Guys.
Black wrote the script for The Nice Guys with Anthony Bagarozzi a few years back, but the project is only now finding its footing. Producer Joel Silver hopes to position the film as a noir thriller much like Black's 2005 effort Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's unclear whether the film will opt for Kiss Kiss' sardonic tone, but we suspect the film will opt for something a little grittier.
We do know that The Nice Guys will follow the duo of Jackson Healy and Holland March as they investigate the suicide of a porn star in 1970s Los Angeles. However, the case begins to heat up when the dead girl's aunt claims to have seen her alive.
Even though the prospect of a Gosling/Crowe team-up is exciting it's worth mentioning that, with several projects in various stages of development, Crowe is by no means a lock for The Nice Guys. Rather, this seems like a bit of dream casting more than anything else.
