The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a history of ending movies with unanswered questions, only to revisit them at a later date, but one Nick Fury mystery from Avengers: Age of Ultron still has yet to be resolved. The MCU's most satisfying moments have come from long-term storytelling, where the seeds of a big moment were sewn years before they actually happened. Avengers: Endgame rewarded patient fans by paying off some of the franchise's biggest character arcs, with Captain America proving he is worthy by wielding Mjølnir, Tony Stark snapping reality back to normal while delivering his classic "I am Iron Man" catchphrase, and the Avengers finally defeating the mad titan Thanos.

Despite that, the MCU hasn't always got it right, with some of its biggest moments being hugely underwhelming. The origin of Nick Fury's missing eye revealed in Captain Marvel, Evan Peters' WandaVision character being Ralph Bohner rather than Fox's Quicksilver, and Gorr barely butchering any Gods on-screen despite his emphatic Thor: Love and Thunder build-up are some of the franchise’s most recent let-downs. But arguably worse than disappointing moments is when Marvel Studios start an interesting storyline only to completely abandon it, as they did with Nick Fury's tease at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Fury Claims Something Crashed In The Banda Sea

Avengers: Age of Ultron - Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury

After the Avengers defeated Ultron, Nick Fury tells Natasha Romanoff that something crash-landed in Indonesia’s Banda Sea, hinting that it was the Hulk's Quinjet that he departed in following the Age of Ultron battle. But Thor: Ragnorok proved that it couldn't have been Banner who crashed because he ended up flying all the way to Sakaar where he became the Grandmaster's champion gladiator. Given that's the case, whatever crashed in the Banda Sea wasn't Hulk's ship but the MCU still hasn't revealed what exactly it was.

The MCU could revisit Fury's unidentified object now that they have started to explore the ocean in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But given the location of the Banda Sea compared to Namor's underwater city in the Atlantic, it’s unlikely the crash could have been a Talokan craft. Another possibility is that it is a surviving Ultron, which could be a good way to reintroduce the villain back into the MCU. The most likely explanation though is that Marvel writers didn't know what would happen to Hulk before Taika Waititi wrote Thor: Ragnarok, so gave Nick Fury the ambiguous line to keep Hulk's options open.

Other MCU Plot Teasers Have Been Abandoned

MCU - Mordo, Rocket, White VIsion

Fury's Age of Ultron claim isn't the only dangling plot line, with several other MCU unanswered teases seemingly scrapped altogether. At the end of Doctor Strange, Earth-616's Mordo vowed to hunt down magic users but hasn't been seen since, and with Doctor Strange 3 looking set to explore more of the multiverse, Strange's new third eye, and the sorceress Clea, it's difficult to see how Mordo will fit into the MCU’s future. Similarly, other characters have been AWOL for a while, including high-profile heroes and villains like White Vision and Spider-Man: Homecoming's Scorpion.

Some missing characters finally look set to have significant roles, with The Incredible Hulk's Samuel Stern and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Adam Warlock both down to return in Phase 5. Rocket Racoon’s origin has always been a mystery, but James Gunn promised to reveal it all in Vol 3. But the biggest unsolved mystery revolves around Nick Fury, because as well as his puzzling Avengers: Age of Ultron line, Fury was revealed to be Talos in disguise in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which suggests other MCU heroes could also be undercover Skrulls. This will certainly be explored in Secret Invasion, but as for what crash-landed in the Banda Sea, that remains a mystery.
