Though seeing the duo back together would surely be eventful, Agatha: Coven of Chaos would be better without Scarlet Witch making an appearance. After her MCU debut in WandaVision, Kathryn Hahn will be returning as Agatha Harkness in a spinoff Disney+ series released during Phase 5. Not much is known about the show so far, but Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is noticeably absent from the cast, and perhaps for the better.

Agatha Harkness was first introduced in WandaVision as Agnes, Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor who is revealed to be a powerful witch in disguise. The series ended with Scarlet Witch defeating Agatha and locking her in her Westview persona, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos could follow her journey to free herself. With Scarlet Witch seemingly alive after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many may want to see the two witches face off in a rematch. However, Agatha’s spinoff series should hold off on having the two meet again in order to truly focus on Agatha’s MCU story.

Agatha’s Story Should Focus On Her

Agatha: Coven of Chaos came about because of how well-received Kathryn Hahn was on WandaVision, showing the character’s potential. Agatha in Marvel Comics even acts as Scarlet Witch’s mentor at one point, which speaks to Agatha’s powers in comparison to Wanda. She’s always had a history with Wanda and Scarlet Witch’s name will likely be brought up many times. While their stories may be intertwined, this spinoff series should focus on establishing Agatha’s individual story instead of rehashing what’s already been shown on WandaVision.

Agatha Harkness is a substantial character in her own right, and Marvel will likely want to capitalize on her popularity. From showing her next steps after Westview to more potential flashbacks of her past in Salem, there are so many directions that Agatha: Coven of Chaos could take. Especially with the Westview residents who are expected to reprise their roles plus the addition of new big stars like Aubrey Plaza and Joe Locke, Agatha’s show should be mainly focused on solidifying her place in the MCU with these new characters, not just on her history with Wanda.

It’s Too Early For A Scarlet Witch Westview Redemption Arc

Wanda frees Westview residents in WandaVision.

With the spinoff series likely picking up in Westview and several of the WandaVision actors returning, Agatha: Coven of Chaos could deep dive into the residents’ feelings. For them, the mental torture of Scarlet Witch's Westview Anomaly is still fresh. While the Scarlet Witch is a hero to many, she will definitely be considered a villain by them. It would be too soon to have her come back to Westview and try and redeem her actions, plus having a villain dynamic for Wanda would be fitting after her latest MCU appearance.

Scarlet Witch is seemingly alive after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the consequences of the destruction she’s caused should weigh heavily on her. She already showed her remorse by destroying all versions of the Darkhold and while the Westview Anomaly was not truly her fault, Wanda is sure to be reflecting on it as the start of all the chaos. Not only would having Wanda be considered a villain by Westview’s residents make sense, but it would allow Agatha: Coven of Chaos to put its titular character in the hero role for once.

Other MCU Shows Proved That Cameos Aren’t Always For The Best

The Disney+ MCU shows have had varying success with some being more well-received than others. While it’s a chance for the studio to elaborate on stories from the films and provide audiences with satisfying cameos, it hasn’t always worked out in their favor. Besides Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner being heavily featured in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, past characters like Abomination and Daredevil also made appearances. This made the overall plot messy and the story was ultimately not Jennifer Walters-centric. On the other hand, Ms. Marvel had no big star cameos and showed how the MCU trusted their future hero Ms. Marvel to hold her own. Agatha: Coven of Chaos was born from WandaVision being a hit, and the MCU should trust its fan-favorite character to carry her own show if they want audiences to take her seriously.

One of the reasons why WandaVision was so well-received was because of the dynamic between Wanda and Agatha. Their initial banter as friendly neighbors brought comedy, and their eventual rivalry was a crucial stepping stone in Scarlet Witch’s story. While this success may make Marvel tempted to have them reunite as soon as possible, this spinoff series would not be the right time. The two witches may cross paths again, but Wanda should ultimately sit Agatha: Coven of Chaos out in order to let Agatha build her MCU future.
