The new title for Agatha: Coven of Chaos teases Scarlet Witch's return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5. Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff became a central character for the MCU in Phase 4, as roles in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness really fleshed out her story. The Disney+ solo series explored her grief after Avengers: Endgame, how she started a fake family, and confirmed the origin of her powers. All of this came to a head in Doctor Strange 2, where Scarlet Witch took a villainous turn and became a multiversal threat in her attempt to reunite with her sons.

Scarlet Witch's MCU future after Doctor Strange 2 became quite uncertain, though. It was widely assumed that the movie would either end with her becoming a bigger threat to the multiverse or being redeemed and starting to move beyond her pain. Instead, the Doctor Strange 2 ending seemingly killed Scarlet Witch, as she destroyed the castle atop Wundagore Mountain while still inside. Audiences have debated her fate ever since, and Marvel's Multiverse Saga slate reveal made no mention of what could come next for Wanda Maximoff.

The return of the Scarlet Witch may have been secretly teased at SDCC 2022, though. One of the many revelations included in Marvel Studios' panel is a new title for the WandaVision spinoff show starring Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness. Originally announced as Agatha: House of Harkness, the spinoff's new title is Agatha: Coven of Chaos. It maintains a similarly witchy focus around Agatha, but the mention of chaos is notable after WandaVision's reveal that Scarlet Witch uses Chaos Magic. Agatha wanted to steal Wanda's Chaos Magic and use it for herself, which she was ultimately unable to do. Now that the Agatha Harkness show's new title incorporates a key piece of Scarlet Witch's story, it now seems even more likely that viewers will see Wanda return in Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

How Scarlet Witch Could Have Survived Doctor Strange 2

Elizabeth Olsen as The Scarlet Witch crying in Doctor Strange 2

Any future MCU appearance for Elizabeth Olsen's character will have to explain how Scarlet Witch survived Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While she could come back in the multiverse, that would be a cheap retcon at this stage. The movie gave Marvel some wiggle room with such an explanation by not showing Wanda's dead body after the castle's ruins fell on top of her. However, showing the destruction of the Darkhold in every universe indicates that she would not have survived the fall of Wundagore. It is most likely that Scarlet Witch's survival will be linked to the red blast of energy that Doctor Strange 2 features as Wundagore falls.

Scarlet Witch's Phase 4 role saw her powers grow exponentially, but she still never truly understood what the Scarlet Witch mantle meant. It is possible that the red flash of energy could have teleported Wanda out of Wundagore or stopped the debris from crushing her. Elizabeth Olsen's Marvel comments after Doctor Strange 2 support this idea, as it seems like she's not ready to stop playing one of the MCU's most powerful characters. Now that the Agatha: Coven of Chaos title includes a connection to her power source and a coven of witches potentially interested in exploring the limits of those powers, revealing Scarlet Witch's survival through a return on Disney+ makes a lot of sense.
