The upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos might end up recasting a powerful magical character from Marvel Television history. It came as a big shock when Marvel announced that Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness of all characters would be getting her own Disney+ series, yet it's steadily become one of the more intriguing projects coming down the pipeline. Presumably, it will be picking up on Agatha after Scarlet Witch’s spell imprisoning her in Westview is lifted upon her supposed death in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Aptly, many are expecting Agatha: Coven of Chaos to bring back Scarlet Witch somehow, but that expectation should probably be lowered.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos was recently been pushed back to 2024, leaving Loki and Secret Invasion as the only MCU Disney+ shows for 2023. It’s interesting to think about how a supernatural series will play into the Multiverse Saga and if it will continue setting the stage for the newly revealed Council of Kangs. The series can certainly pave the way for more magical tales, and it could finally be the project to introduce Mephisto, whose name devilish hung over most Phase 4 projects, including WandaVision. Even beyond the Scarlet Witch, Agatha: Coven of Chaos may bring a powerful character back to life from the annals of Marvel Television.

MCU Theories Suggest Aubrey Plaza Will Play Morgan Le Fay In Coven Of Chaos

Split Image of Aubrey Plaza in Emily the Criminal and Morgan le Fey from Marvel Comics.

Aubrey Plaza is among the enticingly star-studded cast for Agatha: Coven of Chaos. She’ll be joined by the theatrical powerhouse Patti Lupone, and Sasheer Zamata of Saturday Night Live fame. It’ll be like a Parks and Recreation reunion bringing together Plaza and Hahn, two hilarious and talented performers. There’s all sorts of speculation as to whom these newcomers, especially Aubrey Plaza, will be playing in the MCU. One intriguing option is Morgan le Fay, who is one of the most powerful and prominent sorceresses from Marvel Comics. She would certainly be a major player in Agatha: Coven of Chaos and beyond.

At first glance, Morgan le Fay isn’t a character that screams Aubrey Plaza, but that’s exactly why it’s such an exciting option. Plaza’s particular performance style, comedy, and idiosyncrasies could really make an ancient and powerful witch like Morgan le Fay unexpectedly entertaining - quite like what Hahn did with Agatha. That’s what a character needs to stand out and make a mark nowadays, especially if they’re a long-term player as Morgan le Fay deserves to be.

What Morgan Le Fay Would Mean For Agatha: Coven Of Chaos & Beyond

Morgan le Fey casting magic

Given her history and vast powers, Morgan le Fay would fit in quite well with Agatha: Coven of Chaos, especially if Scarlet Witch somehow returns for redemption. Agatha was stripped of her magic by Scarlet Witch at the end of WandaVision, and now that the Darkhold was effectively destroyed across the Multiverse, she’d want to find a new way to regain her powers. That could lead her to make a deal with the devil, or in this case, Morgan le Fay. If one thing's for certain, Morgan le Fay cannot be trusted, so if Agatha goes down this path, whether knowingly or not, she can unleash untold chaos.

Morgan le Fay can easily expand beyond Agatha: Coven of Chaos as she’s importantly connected to many other heroes. Particularly, she’s been a frequent enemy of Doctor Strange and could covet the title and power of the Sorcerer Supreme, thus putting Wong in danger. She’d also easily fit into Dane Whitman’s unfolding story with the Ebony Blade seeing as she first debuted in Black Knight #1 and her origins trace back to Camelot, too. Overall, she can easily function as an antagonist for nearly any supernatural and magical hero, which makes her prospects even more exciting. Should Agatha: Coven of Chaos introduce Morgan le Fay, they’ve plenty to play with.

Recasting Morgan Le Fay Would Be The Final Nail In Runaways' Coffin

Morgan le Fay facing The Runaways in Marvel's The Runaways.

The biggest conundrum surrounding Morgan le Fay, and specifically Aubrey Plaza’s casting, is that the sorceress has already appeared in the MCU before. Elizabeth Hurley played her in the final season of Hulu’s Runaways, and she was particularly well-suited for the character. Runaways comes from the time before WandaVision and Disney+, and with shows like Agents of SHIELD and Daredevil, its placement in the MCU is still ambiguous. WandaVision and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness already created a plot hole with the Darkhold conflicting with Marvel Television. Recasting Morgan le Fay could be a final nail in the coffin, defining it as an alternate continuity.

It’s probably for the best to put Runaways’ to rest, or at least that rendition. It was an entertaining show, and it was very well cast - particularly, Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru, another sorceress who should rejoin the MCU. The team and its adversaries, including Morgan le Fay, deserve a second shot in the main continuity as part of a grand overarching narrative. They could take a page out of Daredevil: Born Again’s book and do a soft reboot better in line with the franchise’s vision. By reintroducing Morgan le Fay, played by Aubrey Plaza in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, the MCU can open up new opportunities for others.
