Aubrey Plaza, who will star in the upcoming Disney+ series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, opens up about why she's joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plaza has had a busy year, starting with a heavily praised lead performance in the dramatic thriller Emily the Criminal. She's also giving a standout turn in The White Lotus season 2, appearing to be something close to an audience surrogate early on. Her upcoming schedule looks to be just as eventful, as she's signed on for Megalopolis — to be directed by Francis Ford Coppola — in addition to her role in the MCU.

In an interview on In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, Plaza discusses her upcoming projects and mentions what drew her to join Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Plaza spoke about her desire to work with series star Kathryn Hahn, and mentions how they only interacted briefly on-screen when Hahn guest-starred on Parks and Recreation. Although she agrees that being a part of Marvel was "cool," Plaza says the real draw of the WandaVision spinoff was getting to share the screen with Hahn, given their real-life friendship and styles:

I think working with Kathryn Hahn, she’s a friend of mine. I’ve known her for years, we’ve never really got—you know, we shared a couple moments on screen on Parks and Recreation years ago, ten years ago, but I’ve never gotten to work with her, really, and she’s I think she’s one of the most incredible actresses that’s working today. She’s a friend of mine, she speaks my language. So you know, to be able to get on screen with her and go toe to toe with her is like—that’s what’s driving me, you know, I think it’s cool that it’s, that’s that it’s Marvel and all that but um, but I’m really just interested to work with Kathryn Hahn.

What We Know About Agatha: Coven of Chaos

Kathryn Hahn as Agnes in WandaVision Episode 3

At this early stage, all that's confirmed about Agatha: Coven of Chaos is that it will put a focus on the character first introduced in WandaVision. More is known about what the spinoff's team will look like, both in front of the screen and behind the camera. The cast of Agatha: Coven of Chaos includes Heartstopper's Joe Locke, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Sasheer Zamata, and Eric Andre, along with Hahn and Plaza. Emma Caulfield Ford, who played Dottie/Sarah in WandaVision, has also been confirmed as returning for the spinoff. Jac Schaeffer, the head writer of WandaVision, returns to serve as writer and executive producer on Agatha.

This points to some deep continuity between the two projects. Agatha: Coven of Chaos will begin filming next week, according to Ford, and fans will likely learn more about the project's specifics as it draws closer to its planned 2023 release. But it is evident the MCU has brought together an impressive supporting cast. Ford, of course, had the iconic role of Anya on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Zamata is a former Saturday Night Live actor who leads the sitcom Home Economics on ABC. As for Andre, he's known for his comedic talents that he displayed in projects like the unique improvisational film Bad Trip.

Marvel doesn't always make the best use of its talented ensembles, something alluded to in the meta She-Hulk ending, but if Schaeffer and the team behind Agatha: Coven of Chaos can find a way to lean into their actors and characters first and foremost, rather than the demands of an always-expanding franchise, it will be certainly a spinoff worth watching. In any case, the acting talent is what appealed most to Plaza.
