The first official poster for this fall's After Ever Happy reveals Tessa and Hardin's latest big screen return. Since the first movie premiered in 2019, the After franchise has been a small but reliable performer among fans. After is itself based on the best-selling novels by Anna Todd, which was turned into the love story between Tessa and Hardin after being initially published online as One Direction fanfiction. The most recent installment in the franchise, After We Fell, debuted in theaters last fall and earned $21.6 million worldwide; it recently made its streaming debut on Netflix.
Set to premiere this September, After Ever Happy is expected to serve as the final part of Tessa and Hardin's story. It is the last book in Todd's main series, though she also wrote a Hardin prequel titled Before. That, along with a sequel centered around Tessa and Hardin's kids, are in development to become movies of their own. Before that, though, fans will get to finish out the main tale with After 4, which sees the returns of leading stars Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The movie shot back-to-back with After We Fell, and both wrapped in late 2020.
As a Valentine's Day treat for fans, After Ever Happy unveiled its poster. It reveals Hardin and Tessa in what appears to be a car, set against a desert landscape. Like previous posters for this franchise, the two are caught up in a romantic moment. The After 4 poster also confirms the movie will debut in the US on September 7. Check it out below.
A plot synopsis for After Ever Happy hasn't been revealed just yet, but based on the trajectory of the books and the previous film, it looks like Tessa and Hardin will be grappling with the surprise revelation from the end of After We Fell. In that installment, Hardin learned his father is actually Christian Vance (Stephen Moyer), and not Ken Scott (Rob Estes) as he had always believed. After We Fell finished with Tessa comforting Hardin, and it's likely the sequel will pick up with the pair as they try to move on from this shocking news. Knowing Hardin, though, he won't make it easy.
After 4 will be the last movie in the franchise for Langford and Fiennes Tiffin, so there will likely be quite a lot of emphasis put on their departures in the lead up to its release. There haven't been many updates regarding the Hardin prequel and next generation sequel since they were announced; it therefore remains to be seen when fans will get to see those hit the big screen, though the previous After movies were able to debut a film every year for the past 4 years. Perhaps production on the first of those two spin-offs can take place sometime in 2022. Either way, Tessa and Hardin have one last outing ahead of them, and its promotional campaign starts now.
