Following recent rumors of Ben Affleck directing Batman: The Brave and The Bold, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn responds to the reports. A new Batman reboot is in the works at DC Studios, as the DCEU is reaching its end this year. While Ben Affleck will appear in The Flash movie, a new Dark Knight will take over for him in the DC Universe. Gunn and Peter Safran announced in January of this year that The Brave and The Bold is one of their major DC films in the works. While it appears Affleck won't be donning the costume again, Gunn has confirmed that they are hoping to have him direct a DC Universe project. With Gunn and Affleck looking for a project that fits the former Dark Knight, many have wondered if The Brave and The Bold could be an option. A recent rumor surfaced online that Affleck is reportedly being eyed to helm the new Batman movie.

While Gunn has addressed several rumors before, the DC Studios co-head rightfully called out a user that referred to him as a liar if the rumors are true. Given that it was previously thought that Affleck would not, in fact, direct The Brave and The Bold, the filmmaker addressed that he's always worked hard to never lie to the fans, and he never plans to. Gunn stressed that he could always change his mind on something, which could including Affleck being hired for The Brave and The Bold, without being a liar. Gunn made this response due to a Twitter thread that had different and baseless accusations by a user, but the logic, of course, could apply to other decisions as well.

If Not Batman, Which DC Universe Film Should Ben Affleck Direct?

The Brave and The Bold would be a coming-full-circle-moment for Affleck as he was initially set to direct a Batman film of his own. The film would have had Affleck work in front and behind the camera for the DCEU installment. But in the end, The Batman became a reboot for Robert Pattinson, with director Matt Reeves at the helm. If The Brave and The Bold isn't the DC Universe movie that Affleck will direct, there are other options for him.

Two of the likeliest options out of the currently-announced DC movies are Superman: Legacy or The Authority. With Gunn writing Superman: Legacy, there have been talks about him also directing it. James Mangold is reportedly being eyed to direct the Swamp Thing live-action movie. That leaves The Authority as a potential project for Affleck, which could be something that falls right into his wheelhouse.

It's worth remembering that there are still several DC Universe movies left to be announced, as only the first half of Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," has been revealed. With someone of Affleck's caliber, any DC Universe project that lands him as the director will presumably well-worth checking out. Time will tell where Affleck falls into the DC Universe if he doesn't direct The Brave and The Bold.
