Warning! This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 6 and the Fire & Blood book.House of the Dragon episode 6 introduced Aemond Targaryen and his lack of a dragon, with the episode also setting up his future mount through one central character's death. Aemond is the second son of King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower and the younger brother of Aegon Targaryen. House of the Dragon episode 6 introduced the child actors playing the two characters after the series' most significant time jump thus far.

House of the Dragon has had time jumps in its first five episodes, usually jumping no more than a few years. Episode 6, however, jumped forward by around 10 years, with Rhaenyra Targaryen having her third child. Alicent was also shown to have more children between House of the Dragon episodes 5 and 6, namely Helaena Targaryen and Aemond Targaryen. In the early stages of episode 6, Aemond was teased heavily by his older brother and cousins due to not having a dragon yet, with the show majorly setting up the payoff for this.

This setup was in the form of Laena Velaryon's death. Laena was shown in episode 6 to have married Daemon Targaryen during the time jump, having two children with him and being pregnant with a third. However, House of the Dragon episode 6 also showed Laena's difficulty in birthing her child, leading to a choice mirroring that of Viserys' in episode 1. Laena, choosing to die a dragon-rider's death as was her wish, commands her dragon Vhagar (the biggest in Westeros) to incinerate her. This sets up the resolution to Aemond's dragon woes, as he goes on to become Vhagar's next rider.

What Aemond's Dragon Being Vhagar Means For House Of The Dragon's Story

As evident by the promo for House of the Dragon episode 7, Aemond's claim of Vhagar after Laena's death will come sooner rather than later, which will have repercussions on the show's overall story. As has been known since the series began, the show is building to the Dance of Dragons, the civil war for the Iron Throne between Aegon Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen. With Vhagar becoming Aemond's dragon, the Green faction (Aegon's faction during the Dance) will now have the biggest and most powerful dragon on their side in the upcoming war.

Also, House of the Dragon episode 6 went out of its way to show the teasing of Aemond at the hands of Rhaenyra's sons. If the show faithfully adapts Aemond's claim of Vhagar, the young prince should lose an eye in a fight with Lucerys shortly after this, furthering both their bad blood and that of their mothers. This sets up the Dance of Dragons even more, and the eventual revenge Aemond and Vhagar will claim against Lucerys and Arrax, the latter's dragon. With House of the Dragon episode 6, the show is setting up Vhagar's part in the upcoming civil war that will divide the kingdom through his loss of a rider, and by showing the House of the Dragon version of Aemond Targaryen and his search for a dragon companion.
