Adventure Time, which aired on Cartoon Network, was a kids' show about Finn the Human and Jake the Dog going on various adventures in their homeland of Ooo. Fans loved this show because, even though it’s a kid’s show, it doesn’t feel like one and the series isn’t afraid to cover harsh topics kid’s shows used to never go near.

From absent fathers to giving up yourself to save those you love; Adventure Time has cemented itself as one of the best shows to air on Cartoon Network. While the story may have ended on Cartoon Network, HBO max is currently releasing hour-long episodes for certain characters showing what happened to them after the finale.

Ice King

Ice King in the Shower with Gunter and the Penguins on Adventure Time

Ice King is one of the most complicated characters in all of Adventure Time. He starts off the show as a villain whose goal is to steal the princesses in Ooo so that they can get married. As the show progresses though, the Ice King is shown to actually be a scientist named Simon who discovered a crown that grants the wearer ice powers but curses them to forget who they are.

Throughout the show, in either flashbacks or moments of clarity, fans get a better look into the tragic story of Simon, A.K.A. the Ice King. In the end, Simon is freed from his curse by a past love and is able to travel the world as himself with no crown taking away his personality.

Peppermint Butler

Never has there been a more loyal candy subject to Princess Bubblegum than Peppermint Butler. A master of the dark and mystic arts, Peppermint Butler is often the second in command to Princess Bubblegum and will use his dark magic when her science isn’t enough.

Peppermint Butler starts out the show as a timid and calm butler, but as the show goes on, fans get to see the dark magic side of him. There are various times in the show where Peppermint Butler will summon demons or curse people, but even though he uses dark magic, he is still a good peppermint candy and butler.

Prismo

Referred to as the wish master, Prismo is a reoccurring character who develops a close friendship with Jake in the series. Prismo is the manifestation of an old man asleep, and at one point in the series he is woken up and the man is killed, therefore killing Prismo.

However, since Prismo does not exist in a single point of time, he is able to walk Jake through on how to bring him back. While he may not play the biggest role in the series, fans loved him and his friendship with Jake.

Princess Bubblegum

Princess Bubblegum is the genius leader of the candy people, known around all of Ooo as one of, if not the smartest person. She uses science and her own inventions daily and fans grow accustomed to the fact that she’s usually ten steps ahead of everyone else.

Part of her rise to power was also creating the Candy Kingdom along with all her candy citizens. Her closest friend in the series is Marceline, and it is later revealed at the end of the series that the two have mutual feelings for each other and finally get together.

Flame Princess

In Adventure Time, it’s common for people to refer to the Flame Kingdom as the evil kingdom, with their leader being a mad man who thrives off being evil. His daughter, however, is very much the opposite of him though she may have the occasional slip-up.

Flame Princess eventually usurps her father and eventually takes lead over the Flame Kingdom and turns them to the good side. Of course, she does still have run-ins with Princess Bubblegum who doesn’t believe she’s truly changed, but Flame Princess is consistent in proving she’s on the good side.

Finn The Human

Finn the Human, one of two main characters, starts off the show as a child looking for adventure near his home in the land of Ooo. Fans of the show are able to see Finn grow over the series from the kid looking to slay evil with his sword to the hero who has been put through the wringer.

Throughout the show, fans see Finn deal with his family’s abandonment, losing his arm, learning not everything can be solved with a sword, and plenty more. By the time the series comes to an end, Finn is more matured than when he started out, even though he’s hardly aged.

Marceline the Vampire

Marceline makes her appearance in the show originally as a sort of frenemy to Finn and Jake, kicking them out of their beloved treehouse. As the show progresses, the group starts to develop a close friendship and Marcy becomes a regular, which allows fans to see her backstory a bit more and how she rejects her father’s offer to run the Nightosphere.

One of the sadder things fans learn is that when she was still a young child roaming the streets of the post-apocalyptic world, Simon was her companion and would wear the crown to protect her, despite slowly losing himself.

Jake The Dog

The second main character in the series, Jake the Dog is the brother and adventure companion of Finn the human. With his special ability to grow and stretch however he wants, Finn comes in handy many times throughout the series, even if he does get distracted easily.

Even though he is technically older than Finn, at least in dog years, he can still be the more immature one of the two often opting to eat a sandwich or sleep than do too much work. By the end of the series, however, Jake is happily married to Lady Rainicorn along with having a few hybrid children.

BMO

Created to give love by Mo, BMO lives with Finn and Jake and is their TV and video game system along with being their best friend. BMO is one of the most beloved characters in the series due to his fun-loving nature and his frequent noir side-quests.

BMO is consistently an important character, who may not go on a lot of quests with Finn and Jake, but is always an important part of the story. BMO undeniably gets the best ending in the series as it’s revealed years after the ending, in the finale that BMO is now the King of Ooo.

Gunter

Gunter wearing Ice King's crown

Gunter is one of the penguin minions for the Ice King, often being singled out by the Ice King for either a mistake he or the Ice King made or as the Ice King’s personal favorite, but he is easily the evilest character in the series.

During an episode where Marcy’s father comes to Ooo and tries to suck the souls of everyone, he calls Gunter the “most evil thing." It’s later revealed Gunter is actually the cosmic entity Orgalog, or the eater of worlds, who fell to Ooo and due to Ooo’s gravity, is forced to look like a penguin.
