'Addams Family' Animated Movie Still in Development (With Tim Burton?)

The last time we reported on a new version of The Addams Family, it was back in March when there were rumors of it being done in stop-motion and (surprise, surprise) 3D.

For awhile Tim Burton was rumored to be directing, however back in March the reaction from Burton's reps was that there was, "no truth to the story." At the time it was also stated that "Tim hasn't lined up any of his projects."

Fast-forward three months at it appears Burton might direct a new Addams Family after all.

The latest word on the project comes from producer Christopher Meledandri when he spoke to Coming Soon at the junket for the animated movie, Despicable Me. Meledandri confirmed that although it's still in the early stages, The Addams Family is moving ahead and that it's to be done using stop-motion animation (ala Coraline, A Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride) as opposed to being computer animated. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but it's refreshing to see some diversity.

Will Tim Burton return to stop-motion with The Addams Family?

As for Burton directing, nothing is for definite quite yet but he is being kept firmly in mind during the project's development. Said Meledandri:

"It's all very, very early, but we are developing with [Tim Burton directing] in mind... We're just now at the story phase. Stuff has been written as though we are doing it in black and white, but that's not correct. It's not incorrect, but it's not correct. We haven't gotten to that point."

There was rumors that The Addams Family would be done in black-and-white. As you can see from the above quote, Meledandri didn't confirm it's going to be done in that form but did say it's being considered. If it was done in B&W it would certainly make the film stand out from all the other bright and cheery animated movies filling the multiplexes these days (the last B&W animated movie I can remember seeing in theaters was the stunning 2007 French film, Persepolis).

Finally, Meledandri confirmed previous reports that the new Addams Family will be based on the original Charles Addams drawings and comics from The New Yorker (which Meledandri's Illumination Entertainment acquired the rights to awhile back), as opposed to any of the later TV series or movies. So file this film under "new adaptation" and not "remake."

The Addams Family stop-motion animation

Meledeandri didn't say anything about the project being in 3D as has been previously rumored. However, omission of that detail on his part doesn't necessarily mean it won't be in 3D. These days we've reached the point where it becomes a talking point if a film ISN'T in 3D, rather than the other way around as it used to be in the good ol' days (remember those?).

Unless the development of The Addams Family especially catches Burton's eye, I can't see him choosing it over other projects he's already got on the way: Dark Shadows, Monsterpocalypse, Frankenweenie (also being done in stop-motion animation), Mai, the Psychic Girl, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Maleficent all have Burton's name attached to them. Of those projects I want Burton to make Dark Shadows before doing anything else, but that's just me.

Would you like to see Burton direct a new stop-motion version of The Addams Family? Or would you prefer he get on with making all the other projects he's attached to first?
