Netflix, arguably the largest video on demand streaming service, originally only streamed TV shows and movies created by other production studios. However, when House of Cards debuted in 2013, Netflix made a name for itself with its own original programming. Since then, the service has released the popular series Orange is the New Black as well as a fourth season of Arrested Development. Netflix also has other series in production, including Marvel’s Daredevil.
Recently, Netflix signed a deal with the Weinstein Company to distribute Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 on-demand at the same time of its release in IMAX theaters. Now, the service will delve more into feature film production – rather than distribution – with comedy actor/writer Adam Sandler.
Netflix and Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions, will work together to produce four feature films that will be exclusively stream by the on-demand service (though Sandler’s other studio film commitments are not included). Chief Content Officer for Netflix, Ted Sarandos, said Sandler’s earlier work has been popular with the service’s viewers.

“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages – everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line – not just in the US but all over the world.”
Although many of Sandler’s films from the ‘90s are considered by some to be comedic classics – The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison, and Big Daddy, just to name a few – his more recent films haven’t been as well-received, such as this year’s Blended or last year’s Grown Ups 2. However, though many viewers may claim Sandler’s work has declined in quality since the ‘90s, he still has a loyal fanbase that turns out for each of the actor/writer’s new releases.
Whether or not the four upcoming films from Happy Madison and Netflix continue in line with Sandler’s more recent releases remains to be seen. Certainly, there is a group of fans who hope these movies would tap into the comedy from Sandler’s nearly 20-year-old hits (and they may be the prevailing set of Sandler fans). However, there’s also the option that Sandler will go in another direction entirely.
Additionally, it’s hard to predict how Sandler’s partnership with Netflix will affect the direction in which these films go. Perhaps the movies will be less family-friendly since they’ll exclusively stream online. Perhaps Netflix will guide the films to fall more in line with the content they’ve so far produced. We won’t know for sure until more information is released on these films and the partnership.
