Netflix releases a trailer for their latest collaboration with Adam Sandler100% Fresh. In the special, Sandler performs his unique brand of stand-up comedy in the format of a one-man variety show.

Known for his pleasantly bizarre Saturday Night Live characterizations and subsequent rise to stardom thanks to numerous mainstream comedy hits during the '90s, Sandler founded Happy Madison Productions at the height of his fame in 1999. The company’s 2004 film 50 First Dates grossed over $196 million for Columbia Pictures, and later films such as Click (2006), You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (2008), and Bedtime Stories (2008) all topped $200 million in the 2000s. The past decade has produced even bigger hits for Happy Madison Productions via Grown Ups (2010) and Grown Ups 2 (2013), thus leading to a lucrative distribution deal with Netflix in 2014. While Sandler’s Netflix productions haven’t necessarily received critical acclaim over the years, subscribers continue to stream in excess.

Today, Netflix released the trailer for 100% Fresh, in which Sandler performs a cleverly-cut variety show in front of a live audience. The clip begins with an easy crowd-pleaser, as Sandler bring his bulldog on stage before transitioning into his specific brand of humor. In sequences reminiscent of his Saturday Night Live sketches of the early '90s, the comic plays an acoustic guitar, wears yellow shades, and teases a “true Adam Sandler story.” From there, the 79-second trailer shows Sandler in different settings, both in front of large crowds and within an intimate night club. The constant is Sandler’s comedic plays on words, while the clip also teases new songs, extravagant light shows, and interpretive performance acts. Overall, the comedic vibe is loose and seemingly politics-free, as Sandler delivers light-hearted and accessible comedy, fully in line with the Happy Madison formula.

For 100% Fresh, Sandler teamed up with his longtime collaborator Steven Brill, who directs the variety show. While Brill has made cameos in Sandler films like The Wedding Singer (1998), Big Daddy (1999), and Mr. Deeds (2002) — and even made his big screen debut in Steven Soderbergh’s 1989 classic Sex, Lies, and Videotape — he’s also directed numerous Sandler films, including the Netflix productions The Do-Over (2016) and Sandy Wexler (2017). Brill also wrote the screenplays for The Mighty Ducks trilogy (1992-96). In a unique cinematic twist, director Paul Thomas Anderson filmed his Punch-Drunk Love (2002) star, Sandler, during a 100% Fresh performance sequence last April.

Based on the 100% Fresh trailer, Sandler seems ready to return to his stand-up roots. If Netflix subscribers respond positively, Happy Madison Productions will undoubtedly have plenty of buzz while promoting Murder Mystery, a 2019 Netflix mystery-comedy starring Sandler alongside Jennifer Aniston and Luke Evans.

100% Fresh premieres October 23 on Netflix.
