Adam Driver and Lady Gaga show off their 90s-era makeovers in the first image from House of Gucci. The upcoming Ridley Scott project tells the story of the 1995 murder of Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the Gucci fashion house and grandson of Gucci founder, Guccio Gucci.
In 1995, while on the way to his Milan office, Gucci was killed by an unknown gunman. Suspicions loomed that his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli, had orchestrated a hitman to take Gucci out. The couple’s 12 year marriage ended in 1985 after Gucci left Martinelli for a younger woman, and by 1998, Martinelli was convicted of arranging a hitman and sentenced to 29 years in prison. Despite this outcome, however, Martinelli eventually had her sentence reduced and by 2016 she was released from prison for good behavior. What’s more, Martinelli later received an enormous settlement from the Gucci estate, ironically making her time in prison extremely profitable for her. Scott’s cinematic recounting of these incidents sees Oscar-winner Lady Gaga as Martinelli, as well as Adam Driver as Gucci, and is currently aiming for a November 2021 release.
There’s clearly still some time to go before House of Gucci arrives, and with impressive stars like Gaga and Driver onboard, there’s plenty of reason to think that this could ultimately end up being an awards season favorite. And while the new film has yet to offer so much as a teaser trailer for the intrigue that’s on its way, an image posted to Lady Gaga’s Instagram account has offered the world its first glimpse at her and Driver in their 90s-era costumes while filming in Italy:
Aside from the obligatory House of Gucci hashtag, Gaga also included the phrase “Signore e Signora Gucci,” which translates to “Mr. and Mrs. Gucci.” Gaga, in particular, has transformed herself for what is sure to be a challenging role, and the two look every bit the 1990s high fashion power couple they’re meant to play. Driver is no stranger to taking on a role that deals with a dysfunctional relationship, either, with his 2019 turn in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story having earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. As for Gaga, she hasn’t appeared in a film since 2018’s A Star is Born, but her on-screen charm was instantly apparent in that effort, as evidenced by her Best Leading Actress Oscar nomination.
Some might balk at the idea of Scott making a film like House of Gucci, arguing that it glorifies Martinelli’s crime. But a story as grandiose as this one is sure to have far more to it than what Martinelli was convicted for. Audiences are consistently drawn to stories about murder and deceit, and when those themes take place within the relationship of celebrities, the intrigue intensifies. With an accomplished filmmaker like Scott behind what is so far an impressive cast, House of Gucci could very well be the film that everyone is talking about next winter.
