Chris Evans recently gave Marvel fans some very bad news. He announced that, as of the end of Avengers 4, he is finished playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is not a surprise, as Evans has said that he wants to spend more time behind-the-camera, directing his own movies than starring in them. However, at least some fans held out hope that he could stick around, even if just as Steve Rogers in cameo roles. However, this sounds like it won't happen and now Marvel has to make a decision: will it recast Steve Rogers with a new actor, will Captain America disappear completely, or will a different character take on the mantle?

When it comes to adding in a new Captain America, there is the problem that he is a hero due to his Super Soldier Serum and this is unique to Steve Rogers. With that said, there are a couple of heroes already in the MCU who have portrayed Captain America in the comics and are more than set to take over in the movie if need be. There are also a pair of ladies who could possibly step up and take on the mantle, maybe with the help of tech from Wakanda.

With that said, there are also some great actors who would slide into the role of Steve Rogers perfectly if Marvel recasts - and a few others who wouldn't be a great fit for America's greatest hero.

Here are the 10 Actors Who Could Replace Chris Evans’ Captain America (And 10 We Don’t Want).

WANT: SEBASTIAN STAN

Sebastian Stan as Bucky with Captain America Shield

When it comes to who should or shouldn't replace Chris Evans as Captain America, many arguments begin and end with Sebastian Stan. After all, it is not a good time to start recasting actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - at least not for any major players. There shouldn't be a James Bond rotation with Tony Stark or Steve Rogers when there are so many other characters to focus on.

With that said, in the comics, Bucky Barnes took over the role of Captain America when it looked like he had perished after the events of Civil War.

In the movies, this was teased in Winter Soldier and Civil War when Bucky got his hands on the shield. MCU should definitely hand the role of Cap over to Stan. It would be interesting to see Winter Solder take on the role of Captain Amerca.

DON'T WANT: WENTWORTH MILLER

Wentworth Miller as Michael Scofield in Prison Break

Wentworth Miller brought a lot of fun to the world of Flash with his portrayal of Captain Cold. The villain-turned-hero in Legends of Tomorrow was perfectly portrayed by the former Prison Break star. With Captain Cold no longer a featured player in the Arrowverse, Miller has a lot more free time, though he is still signed on to come back on occasion for special appearances.

With that said, there have been a lot of fans who want Miller to take over the role as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this probably wouldn't work. While Miller was great as Captain Cold, he works best as an anti-hero with swagger and not as the stoic hero that Steve Rogers proved to be during Chris Evans tenure.

WANT: JOHN KRASINSKI

John Krasinski did an interview when promoting his new Amazon Prime Video series Jack Ryan. In it, he said that he felt that he would be better as a hero like Ryan than as a superhero in many cases.

Interestingly, Krasinski was originally up for the role of Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he lost it to Chris Evans.

However, Krasinski had no problem losing the role since he knew that Chris Evans would be perfect as Captain America. Looking at Krasinski and his roles in A Quiet Place and Jack Ryan, it is easy to see him stepping into a hero's shoes and becoming the new Steve Rogers. This is something that could work for both him and the MCU.

DON'T WANT: LUKE EVANS

Dracula wearing armor in Dracula Untold

Luke Evans has had a few chances to prove himself as a leading man. He enjoyed his breakout by portraying Apollo in Clash of the Titans before playing a bigger god in Immortals as Zeus. He also played one of the leads in The Three Musketeers before getting the chance to kickstart a shared universe world as Vlad in Dracula Untold.

This movie halted the Universal Monsters' shared universe. However, it wasn't the first or the last time that the world of monsters failed to get off the ground. With that said, Evans was great in his portrayal of the sympathetic future Dracula. The problem with Evans portraying Captain America lies in his personality, which is honestly too dark and too British to take on the role of Steve Rogers in the MCU. However, Moon Knight is another matter.

WANT: DENZEL WASHINGTON

Denzel Washington as Robert carrying a gun in The Equalizer 2

Many fans are eager to see a non-white actor take on the role of Steve Rogers. In fact, some fan castings have called for Will Smith to step into the role. While Smith has proven to be a box office attraction, he is already a star in Suicide Squad and he just doesn't feel right for the role of Steve Rogers. He makes a better cocky anti-hero in movies like Suicide Squad and Hancock.

Steve Rogers is not an anti-hero. He is the antithesis to an anti-hero -- someone who is almost so good that he would be boring if he wasn't so likable. Because of this, Denzel Washington is a much better fit for the role of Steve Rogers. Denzel is 63, so this might not be likely, but if the MCU ever decided to make a movie about old man Steve Rogers from the comics, Washington is definitely someone who could pull it off.

DON'T WANT: CHANNING TATUM

GI Joe Channing Tatum Retaliation

Channing Tatum really wants to portray a superhero in a comic book movie. He has been trying to get Gambit into production for years. However, with Disney purchasing Fox and Gambit no closer to shooting now than it ever was, this likely won't happen. This doesn't mean that he should be brought to the MCU, though. The last thing that Marvel should do is hire Tatum to play Steve Rogers in the MCU.

Despite the fact that they considered him in the start, Tatum just isn't a good fit for the role.

As the G.I. Joe movie franchise has shown, Tatum can play a soldier and he is a lot better of an actor than some will give him credit for. However, he is also a little too aloof to portray the man out of time who is Steve Rogers. He has the look and the build, but pulling off the personality of Rogers might be a little too much to ask of the actor.

WANT: GARRETT HEDLUND

Garrett Hedlund in Pan

Garrett Hedlund was one of the  actors who the Marvel Cinematic Universe was considering when they were originally casting the role of Steve Rogers. He had a chance for a big budget sci-fi movie in the past with Tron: Legacy and proved his acting chops in Four Brothers. However, he just didn't have enough done at the time and thus Chris Evans was chosen at the time.

With that said, Hedlund has really started to show his acting scope with movies like Mudbound and Unbroken. He also has the charisma to step right in and keep the character strong if he were to win the recasting battle for Steve Rogers. He would be an edgier Captain America, but if they recast the role, changing up the character is not a bad thing.

DON'T WANT: BRENTON THWAITES

Star Wars: Han Solo Fan Casting - Brenton Thwaites

Brenton Thwaites is on a few fans' wish lists for the role of Steve Rogers. However, the problem here is that he almost seems too young to play Captain America. Yes, Stever Rogers was frozen in time for many years and wasn't that old when he went down, but he still needs to be someone who can carry the role as the hardened veteran.

With that said, Thwaites likely ruined any chance he had of playing someone like Steve Rogers when he took on the role of Dick Grayson in the DC streaming universe's Titans. Grayson is someone who was always seen as a more positive and upbeat sidekick of Batman. However, DC decided to made him dark and violent in the TV show, which would be something that would be hard to shake if Thwaites ever wanted to play the virtuous Captain America in the MCU.

WANT: EMILY VANCAMP

While it may be unlikely, there is always the chance that the MCU could swap Captain America's gender after Steve Rogers leaves and bring us a female Captain America.

If we were ever to see a female Captain America on the big screen, there isn't a better choice than Emily Vancamp's Sharon Carter to take on the mantle.

She is the great niece of Rogers' old flame, Peggy Carter, and was the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent originally tasked with watching over Steve Rogers. Sharon then sided with Steve Rogers during the Civil War storyline and proved that she could always be relied upon. With the recent success of Wonder Woman and Brie Larson taking on the role of the titular hero in the upcoming Captain Marvel, now might be the time to bring a female Captain America to the big screen.

DON'T WANT: ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD

Alexander Skarsgard Big Little Lies

Interestingly, Alexander Skarsgård was originally on the short list to play Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He didn't get the part, although his dad, Stellan Skarsgård, landed the role as one of Thor's Earthly companions. Now that Chris Hemsworth looks like he will be getting more opportunities to play the God of Thunder, could there be room for the younger Skarsgård to join the MCU in a different role?

Skarsgård has proven that he can he heroic thanks to his role as the titular character in Tarzan in 2016. He has also shown a rougher side in the HBO vampire series True Blood. However, while Skarsgård is almost sure to land a superhero role in the future, he really doesn't fit into the character of Steve Rogers.

WANT: STEPHEN AMELL

Stephen Amell Suggests Arrow Constantine Crossover

Stephen Amell has really shined as the DC Comics superhero Arrow on The CW. It was Amell and Arrow that set the bar for the The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning, proving that these heroes deserved a platform to tell their stories. Along the way, Amell has shown that he is dedicated to being a superhero - and he's done this in style.

Would Amell agree to leave DC when Arrow finally ends its run? If he does, there could be a place for him in the MCU. Amell could easily switch things up and take on the role of Steve Rogers, although he might need to learn a few new facial expressions than the ones he uses on Arrow, as Steve Rogers doesn't typically look so intense.

DON'T WANT: JENSEN ACKLES

Jensen Ackles has spent more than a decade on television playing the brash and tough Dean Winchester on Supernatural. Sadly, when it comes to taking his talent to the big screen, things have not gone as well, with his biggest hit being the critically disappointing horror remake My Bloody Valentine 3D. However, this doesn't mean that Ackles has no superhero experience. In fact, he voiced Jason Todd in the DC animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood. Ackles also has the look of a hero.

However, his background on Supernatural makes him better suited to play the role of a bad guy or a rough anti-hero, not the goody Captain America we see in the MCU.

While Chris Evans was able to go from Johnny Storm to Steve Rogers, Ackles hasn't yet proven to have the same range.

WANT: RYAN PHILLIPPE

Shooter season 2 Ryan Phillippe

Ryan Phillippe was on the shortlist for the role of Captain America at the start. Since he has so much experience, he could have brought a lot to the role. He lost out on the chance to Chris Evans. After this, he decided to reinvent his career with the USA television series Shooter.

Maybe the problem with Phillippe is that his past roles are a bit risqué, but who can forget Chris Evans' whipped cream scene from Not Another Teen Movie? This means that Phillippe's previous roles shouldn't be an issue. The reason why Phillippe was not originally chosen for the role of Steve Rogers was because he had never proven to be a bankable star as a lead. However, now that Captain America is a household name, it would be a great time for an actor without as much box office success to step into the role.

DON'T WANT: SAM WORTHINGTON

Sam Worthington The Titan Netflix

Hollywood has wanted to make Sam Worthington a star for a long time. If you take a look at his list of credits, there are a lot of projects that never seemed to get off the ground, mostly due to the fact that Worthington was not able to pull off the goal of winning crowds and critics over.

Worthington was the lead in Terminator: Salvation, but this only lasted for one movie. He got two shots at the Clash of the Titans reboots but the special effects won the day there. In Avatar, he was just a role player in James Cameron's 3D world -- and he wasn't even the most memorable character in the movie. When it comes to Captain America, Chris Evans immediately fit the role and made the character his own. However, this might not be something that Worthington is capable of doing yet.

WANT: COLTON HAYNES

While there might be some actors in the Arrowverse who could easily step into the role of Steve Rogers, Colton Haynes might be one of the better choices. Listed on more than one fantasy casting list for the role of Captain America, Haynes took on the role of Red Arrow on Arrow and was great as the sidekick anti-hero opposite Stephen Amell's Arrow.

At 30 years old, Haynes is young enough to carry the role for an extended period of time.

He also has the look and jawline of the Captain America we see in the comic books. He has been in big budget action movies like San Andreas and he has carried his own TV show in Teen Wolf. He might have what it takes to succeed in the MCU.

DON'T WANT: HAYLEY ATWELL

Agent Carter Hayley Atwell Season 2 Finale Season 3 Potential

Marvel Comics helped fans fall in love with Peggy Carter thanks to the short-lived ABC television series Agent Carter, in which the supporting character from Captain America: The First Avenger took on spies, gender politics, and Howard Stark. She did this with a style and panache that most heroes in the MCU wish they had. Then, in the movies, Steve Rogers saw her again before she passed away from old age.

With that said, there have been some fan theories that Peggy Carter could somehow make it to the present day Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to time-travel, something that could happen due to the Infinity Stones or the Microverse that Ant-Man ended up in. However, if there is ever a female Captain America, it should be Peggy's niece Sharon. Though we'd love to see Hayley Atwell back in the MCU, the wonderful Agent Carter should finally be given a chance to rest.

WANT: MATT BOMER

Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey in White Collar

Many fans have wished to see Matt Bomer grace the big screen as a superhero. There have been fan casting imagining Bomer in the roles of both Batman and Superman. As a matter of fact, Bomer said that when he was 23-years-old, he was up for the role of Superman when Brett Ratner was working on making the movie. Bomer said that he was chosen to play the Man of Steel before the movie fell apart.

If there is one character in the Marvel Universe who matches up well with the Big Blue Boy Scout of DC Comics, it is Steve Rogers. If Bomer gets another chance at playing a superhero, it should be as Captain America. However, Bomer is currently joining DC Comics Doom Patrol series, so this may be unlikely. However, his fans can dream.

DON'T WANT: KELLAN LUTZ

Kellen Lutz was someone who looked like he might be a star on the rise. After his breakout supporting role in the Twilight franchise, many thought that he was the next big thing. As a result of this, he got two major opportunities in fantasy movies. He appeared in Immortals and then played the lead role in The Legend of Hercules. As he showed in the latter movie, he is fantastic in action scenes.

However, he struggled with the charisma that was needed to carry a franchise.

As he has shown in other movies like The Expendables 3, he is the guy to call when a big action hero is needed. However, he might not be the guy to call when you want someone to be the moral compass that leads all others into action. Stick him in Suicide Squad or another action flick and he's sure to be great. However, he should be kept away from Captain America for now.

WANT: ANTHONY MACKIE

Marvel Comics had two Captain America's at one point, with Steve Rogers working in his civilian identity as a special ops operative and Sam Wilson giving up his role as Falcon and taking on a new winged version of Captain America. The two then ended up in conflict with each other throughout the comics, as they were on separate sides of social issues.

Some fans have wondered if the MCU might try the same thing, but without Steve Rogers. After seeing Anthony Mackie take on the role of Falcon, many fans are eager to see him take on the mantle of Captain America. Though more fans wish to see Winter Soldier take over the role of Captain America, what if Anthony Mackie's Falcon also takes on a similar role as his character in the comics and comes into a confrontation with Bucky's Cap? This could create a very interesting storyline for the next Captain America movie.

DON'T WANT: MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY

Both Marvel and DC Comics have wanted to bring Matthew McConaughey on board to play someone in their movies. McConaughey has said that he has been sent scripts by both companies to read and discuss roles. However, nothing has come of any of those meetings. Despite this, McConaughey has still mentioned that he would be interested and open to to joining the MCU or DCEU if the role was right.

Would Marvel dangling a marquee character like Steve Rogers be enough to bring McConaughey into the fold? There were some fans who expressed interest in seeing him take on the role of Captain America even before Chris Evans took the role. However, McConaughey might not be the best person to take on the mantle. Though he'd likely make a great villain, let's keep him away from Captain America.
