10 Actor Siblings Who Are Really Close (And 5 Who Aren't)

Siblings can have complicated relationships. Like any familial bond, the relationship between siblings is meant to nourish and support and be a source of joy and fun. However, life gets much more complicated than that. Even good relationships between siblings can encounter rough times and serious issues.

That’s just with most people-- most people aren’t famous actors and actresses whose work and personal lives are ritualistically observed by millions of people every day. When one or more siblings are involved with that kind of pressure and publicity, relationships can get seriously taut.

There are plenty of examples of actor siblings who have maintained close relationships and not let the pressure of Hollywood get in the way of their lives and their familial ties. However, there are few siblings who have not held so close together, either because of the pitfalls of Hollywood life, or regardless of them. For better or worse, blood is thicker than water.

Kate Hudson was a romantic comedy sensation throughout the 2000s. Her breakout role in 2000 was Penny Lane in Almost Famous, where she played the manic pixie dream girl groupie queen to amateur music journalist William Miller, who was played by Patrick Fugit.

Kate’s brother Oliver Hudson is not quite as well-known as his sister but he was a regular on the CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement.

Kate and Oliver have remained close despite-- or perhaps because of-- a few tense incidents with their biological father, Bill Hudson. In June 2015 Bill publicly disowned the two siblings. However, they are still frequently spotted together going to Lakers’ games and taking their respective children on skiing trips together via Instagram. They both apparently share a dry sense of humor in real life.

The sisters Deschanel have each made big names for themselves in Hollywood. One of Zooey Deschanel’s earliest big screen roles was also in Almost Famous; she played William Miller’s big sister who chased her dream of becoming a globe-trotting flight attendant.

Since then, she’s had well received roles in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 500 Days of Summer and starred in the FOX sitcom New Girl. Emily Deschanel has had her own considerable success as one of the leading duo on the procedural drama Bones.

Emily and Zooey have been mutually supportive professionally and very close personally. In May 2016, Emily appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and talked about both her and Zooey bringing their infant children to the FOX sets of their respective shows. Emily said that both she and her sister having babies around the same time was “amazing.

Kyle Richards

Kyle Richards began her career in earnest as a child actress on Little House on the Prairie in 1975. Since then she’s starred in various horror films, including 1978’s Halloween, and appeared in several T.V. shows like 7th Heaven, ER and Days of our Lives.

Kyle’s older sister Kim Richards also started acting very young and has had several small parts in movies and T.V. shows over her career. Most recently she appeared in Sharknado 3.

Kyle and Kim have a primetime reality show that puts their family drama on display. On Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, the two sisters have always had something causing them to bicker. Much of their fighting has stemmed from Kim’s battle with alcoholism but petty squabbles between the sisters and the other stars erupt all the time.

Alex Watson and his famous sister Emma Watson

Emma Watson was thrust into the spotlight at a young age when she was cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. She stayed in the role for all eight films over a ten year period and has continued her acting career in films like the live action Beauty and the Beast and The Circle.

Emma has a younger brother named Alex. Modeling is more his main claim to fame, although he did make a few cameo appearances as a Hogwarts student in Order of the Phoenix.

He and Emma actually modeled together for Burberry Fashion in 2010 and the two siblings have reportedly been close and grounded throughout their lives. Emma and Alex actually have twin little sisters, Lucy and Nina and a younger brother Toby, who are still children.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Donnie Darko and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Elizabeth Darko in Donnie Darko

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal have each had considerable success with multiple famous roles in Hollywood. They actually appeared in three different movies together early in their respective careers, including A Dangerous Woman and Homegrown.

Their star-making roles were both in the film Donnie Darko where they actually played characters who were brother and sister. More recently Jake had a harrowing turn in Nocturnal Animals and Maggie has a lead in the new HBO series The Deuce.

The Gyllenhaal siblings have remained close all throughout their individual and converging careers. Just recently Jake told Us Weekly about how impressed he is by Maggie as a mom and her two daughters Ramona and Gloria: "When I'm with them all I can think about is what incredible work my sister has put in and what a good mother she is.”

Alec Baldwin has been a prolific actor on stage and on both big and small screens. He had a starring role on 30 Rock from 2006 to 2013 and most recently lent his voice to the Dreamworks animated family comedy Boss Baby.

He’s also appeared on various Saturday Night Live skits starting in 2007. Stephen Baldwin is also an actor known for his starring role in the TV show The Young Riders from 1989 to 1992 and as the lead role in Bryan Singer’s The Usual Suspects in 1995.

Politics seems to be at the heart of the modern feud between the Baldwin brothers. Stephen came out in support for Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign and Alec has always been a staunch critic.

The tension in their relationship wasn’t helped by Alec’s now famous impersonation of President Trump on SNL. Stephen appeared on “Fox and Friends” and expressed his exacerbation at the late night show’s parody, adding that he and Alec have been feuding and or not speaking since the 2016 election.

Kate Mara in House of Cards Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Kate Mara had made episodic appearances on several different shows like Nip/Tuck and CSI before landing her break out TV role in 24. Since then she’s appeared in many more films and shows, most recently the Netflix political thriller House of Cards and the marine biopic Megan Leavey.

Rooney Mara similarly had guest starring roles in TV shows like ER and Law and Order: SVU, before landing a string of star making roles in films like the 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake, The Social Network and the American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Kate started acting earlier than Rooney, but Kate recently interviewed with ABC in June to talk about bonding with Rooney over acting. “We would both go on auditions and come home and talk about the terror of certain auditions and funny stories and so it just became something super special that you can actually bond with a sibling with which is very rare,” Kate said.

Shaliene Woodley began her acting career early with parts in TV shows like The O.C. and Crossing Jordan. Her first major critical success on film came starring with George Clooney in 2011’s The Descendants.

From there, she went on to star in the young adult future dystopia adaptation of The Divergent Series and the teen cancer drama adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars. More recently, Shailene played one of the leads in the HBO TV miniseries adaptation of Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty.

Shailene’s brother Tanner has had a few small acting parts as well including a part in an episode of Boston Legal. Tanner attended the MTV Movie awards ceremony with his sister and author John Green in 2015. The closeness between the siblings was on full display when she won and accepted the award for best Female Performance for The Fault in our Stars.

Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen are both sons of the famous actor Martin Sheen and have followed their father’s example. Emilio Estevez had one of his break out roles in John Hughes’ still fondly remembered The Breakfast Club.

Charlie has had much more consistent fame over the course of his acting career, such as with roles in Wall Street and a regular role in Two and a Half Men. They even starred together in 1988’s Young Guns.

There seems to have always been some tension between Emilio and Charlie, in part over Emilio’s decision to keep the family’s original surname. Charlie has repeatedly taken jabs at his older brother during interviews and brought a whole lot of drama and heart ache to the family during his drug related antics in 2011.

Scarlett Johansson with her twin brother Hunter at a red carpet event

Scarlett Johansson is one of the most famous contemporary actresses in Hollywood. She received critical acclaim for her role opposite Bill Murray in Lost in Translation and has since become a bona fide action star and dramatic persona.

She’s appeared in five different Marvel movies as the consummate agent Natasha Romanoff and had other eye-catching action roles in Lucy and the live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.

Scarlett Johansson actually has three siblings, a sister named Vanessa, a brother named Adrian, and a twin brother named Hunter, along with a paternal half-brother named Christian. Hunter is a bit more focused on politics, having worked on Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Nevertheless, Scarlett and Hunter have both gone to each other’s red carpet events and charitable fundraisers, often photographed side by side.

Ben and Casey Affleck have been acting since they were both young adults. They have even starred together in several films over the course of their careers including Good Will Hunting and Gone Baby Gone.

These days, Ben is known in the superhero fandom as the actor playing Bruce Wayne and Batman in the DC Cinematic Universe, especially in the highly anticipated Justice League. Casey recently received major recognition when he won an Academy Award for his performance in Manchester by the Sea.

Although their individual careers have taken decidedly different turns the two brothers have always been supportive of each other. Even in creatively rigorous situations when Ben was directing Casey in Gone Baby Gone, their brotherhood let them respect and play off of each other.

The twin sisters born Esther “Eppie” Friedman and Pauline “Popo” Friedman were born in July 1918 in Iowa to Jewish-Russian immigrants. They each launched successful day-time and late night talk show careers in the sixties and seventies.

They each also hosted a write in advice column under more famous pen names. Esther became Ann Landers for the “Ask Ann Landers” column and Pauline became Abigail van Buren for the “Ask Abby” column.

The two advice columnist celebrities and twin sisters did not reconcile over their rival careers. Van Buren’s daughter Jeanne Philips, who continues the “Ask Abby” column, described the animosity as stemming from Ann Landers wishing to be an individual and Abigail van Buren enjoying the attention of being a twin.

By the time Esther “Ann Landers” passed away in 2002, the sisters had still not been on speaking terms.

Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson have each had considerable success staring in numerous comedies and romantic comedies. One of Luke’s earliest name making parts was in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels as a romantic interest to Cameron Diaz.

Owen had his own star-making turn as the hip new model Hansel in 2000’s Zoolander. The very next year they both starred in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums. Luke found continued fame with movies including 2006’s Idiocracy and Owen recently reprised his role in Zoolander 2.

Luke and Owens’ both first film was Bottle Rocket in 1996, which the brothers wrote together. They also played a comedic rendition of the real life aviation innovators the Wright brothers in 2004’s Around the World in 80 Days. Although their father just passed away in May after his battle from Alzheimer’s, the Wilson brothers are closer than ever.

Liam Hemsworth and Chris Hemsworth

The middle and younger Hemsworth brothers Chris and Liam are among the hottest Hollywood hunks working today. Chris’s biggest claim to fame is playing Thor Odinson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role which he has portrayed in four different films, not counting the hotly anticipated Thor: Ragnarok.

Liam has his own franchise success from his role as Gale Hawthorne in all four Hunger Games movies opposite Jennifer Laurence.

In an interview with W Magazine in September, Chris revealed that his younger brother Liam almost got cast as Thor instead of him, and that a sense of sibling rivalry kind of psyched him up when he resubmitted his audition tape. If the brothers can go through that and still send each other affectionately teasing Instagram posts on their birthdays, their closeness must be worthy.

The animosity between Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontain is perhaps one of the most famous and longstanding sisterly feuds in Hollywood. Both became major stars during the Hollywood golden age of the 30s and 40s. Olivia stared as Maid Marion in The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and Joan starred in Rebecca with Laurence Olivier.

The feud was reportedly bitter even from early childhood personally and persistent professionally. Olivia, the older sibling by a year and a half, reportedly beat and taunted Joan into adulthood.

One of the most famous boiling points of the feud came in 1941 when both sisters were nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award. Younger Joan’s win didn’t help repair the relationship at all. The sisters visibly avoided each other into their golden years, although Olivia did issue a public statement expressing her sadness at Joan’s death in December 2013.
