Run All Night entered into a long line of urban-set crime-thrillers with its story of a long night set across the landscape of New York City, as well as being the third collaboration between star Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra in their fruitful partnership for action movies.
While the other movies in their shared back catalog (2011's Uknown, 2014's Non-Stop, and 2018's The Commuter) are naturally recommended viewing for a fan of Run All Night, there are many other similar thrillers that should also be considered when looking for more of the same action and suspense.
Safe (2012)
Jason Statham plays a former cop/cage fighter who is mercilessly punished for winning a fight that he shouldn't have. At the end of his rope, he stumbles across a young girl in trouble and finds a new purpose in being her protector.
Waging a one-man war against the Chinese and Russian mafias, as well as every corrupt cop in New York City, Statham's bare-knuckle hero will be more than enough to win over a fan of uncompromising action heroes.
Road to Perdition (2002)
Tom Hanks leads a star-studded cast in director Sam Mendes' atmospheric Depression-era crime movie about a mob enforcer who embarks on a journey of violent revenge with his young son when the rest of their family is murdered.
A thrilling and bullet-riddled blockbuster, Road to Perdition never compromised on its pedigree and artistry and received Oscar-nominations in six categories, including acting Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, and Best Supporting Actor, winning Best Cinematography.
Angel Has Fallen (2019)
Gerard Butler struck gold with his very own Die Hard clone franchise when his lower-budgeted blockbuster won the battle of the White House action movies against Roland Emmerich's White House Down. The second sequel to Olympus Has Fallen expanded the scope of the series in many ways and took it back to basics in others.
Butler's super Secret Service agent is framed for an attempted assassination attempt on the president and is forced to go on the run and team up with his estranged father, played by Nick Nolte, in order to find the real culprits and stop them from finishing the job.
Extraction (2020)
Chris Hemsworth teamed up with Avengers stunt co-ordinator Sam Hargrave for their directorial debut in this thrilling graphic novel adaptation written and produced by fellow MCU MVPs, Joe and Anthony Russo.
Hemsworth plays a down-and-out mercenary who takes on a difficult extraction job when a criminal kingpin's son is kidnapped and held for ransom in Dhaka. Facing impossible odds, the pair form a bond and Hemsworth forges another lovable action hero for the public in the process.
The Warriors (1979)
Walter Hill's classic beat-em-up movie is a stylistic landmark that remains hugely entertaining many decades later. The titular Warriors are a New York gang who, after being framed for the murder of a beloved local figure at a mass meeting, have to fight their way back to their Coney Island home turf.
Fans of Run All Night should consider this a must-see as it's fair to say that the long night of mayhem in The Warriors was a big influence, as it has been for essentially every action movie that came after it.
Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
A remake of John Carpenter's classic original Assault on Precinct 13 from 1976, this thriller sees Ethan Hawke's withdrawn cop hiding from the deadly action of his previous undercover work in a secluded old police station set for imminent closure.
When a renowned criminal ends up in the cells, it causes the sleepy precinct to become the object of a massive siege led by well-armed crooked cops on a mission to take him out, forcing cops and criminals to lay differences aside and band together in defense of their lives over a long night of stoic, Western-inspired, shootouts that fans of Run All Night will likely recognize and appreciate.
21 Bridges (2019)
The late Chadwick Boseman leads this intense crime thriller about a botched robbery in Manhattan that results in the deaths of several cops and triggers a massive manhunt for the criminals.
Similarly to Extraction, 21 Bridges reteamed the MCU star with Infinity War and Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who once again produced, and the hard-hitting gunplay of the movie alone would be enough to capture the attention of a Run All Night fan, even without the incredible acting talent of the cast.
16 Blocks (2006)
Bruce Willis' washed-up cop has a seemingly simple task ahead of him when he has to transport a witness to trial across only a matter of several blocks in Manhattan, but that witness is on their way to take down some of the city's most corrupt cops.
Willis reminds movie fans of his original star-making talents as an everyman who can still impress in an action sequence and co-stars Mos Def and David Morse provide plenty of the same dramatic punch seen in Run All Night's impressive ensemble.
Collateral (2004)
The reluctant buddy formula in thriller movies doesn't always revolve around characters whose relationship deepens and improves over the course of the story. Sometimes it can be a great opportunity to place two stars head to head in an intense onscreen rivalry, such as with Jamie Foxx's mild-mannered cab driver and Tom Cruise's psychotic assassin in Collateral.
Set across the urban sprawl of nighttime Los Angeles, the hitman and his begrudging accomplice go on an odyssey of dark adventure during the course of one night, providing a platform for truly unforgettable performances from each star.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
In terms of action movies set mostly in New York City, there are few that can challenge the authority of the John Wick franchise when considering each movie's world-renowned choreography and none, so far, has utilized the city as a playground for action sequences quite as extensively as the second installment.
Successfully dragged back into his mysterious underworld of assassins, the titular hitman is pitted up against a variety of opponents, including Common in a role reminiscent of his character in Run All Night.
