If there's one genre that tends to split casual audiences and film critics, it's action. These movies are typically meant to be crowd-pleasers that deliver things like exciting sequences, major set pieces, and pulse-pounding action above all else, sometimes at the expense of character development and other things critics are looking for.

Of course, there are times when those movie reviewers are actually more positive about an action flick than the everyday film watchers. They end up being considered "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, only for their IMDb rating to be a fair bit lower, even if it's still a good score overall.

Another in a long line of Disney's live-action remakes, Mulan takes some of the fun out of the animated original. Some of the songs were removed and the hilarious supporting character of Mushu was completely gone, which might be why some fans were unhappy with this.

Critics had their issues with things like the screenplay but they were more positive about the performances, production design, and especially the action sequences, which were praised by most. Even the reviewers who lauded it would likely rank it below the original.

These days, Mad Max is a name that gets fans pumped as, decades after the original trilogy, Mad Max: Fury Road arrived and blew everyone away. It's widely viewed as the best in the franchise and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

The first film arrived in 1979 and reviews were somewhat mixed at first even though Mad Max was a big box office success. Over time, critics have come to appreciate the movie more and more, though casual audiences have become a bit less happy with it.

Blooded Samara Weaving and Steven Yeun in Mayhem

Sometimes, an action movie just needs to be wacky, exciting, and filled with bloody fun. That's what makes Mayhem such a blast as it takes place in a corporate building where a virus spreads that causes everyone to act out their worst impulses in a violent way.

Those who reviewed the movie seemed to really like the over-the-top nature of the action, as well as the leading performances by Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving. Ultimately, audiences were colder on Mayhem despite the fact that it feels like a crowd-pleaser in almost every way.

Speaking of movies that are designed to be crowd-pleasers, The Old Guard is basically just a really fun action flick. Led by the always entertaining Charlize Theron, the film focuses on a group of seemingly immortal mercenaries.

Given the somewhat wacky premise, it seems like critics wouldn't be fans. However, they loved Theron's performance, the set pieces, and the work of Gina Prince-Bythewood as director. Casual viewers didn't like it as much though they did praise the action and the LGBQT+ representation.

Denzel Washington and Chris Pine walking by a train in Unstoppable

Tony Scott was always a director you could count on for some high-octane action. He helmed the likes of Top Gun, Man on Fire, and more throughout his career. He worked often with Denzel Washington, which was again the case for Unstoppable, Scott's final film before his passing.

Along the same lines as Speed, the film was praised for the tense setup surrounding a runaway train that two men (Washington and Chris Pine) attempt to stop. Although critics were quite happy with it, audiences seemed to suggest that they only found it to be pretty good at best.

Considering that 2020 was such a trying year for the entire world, you would expect fun action movies released that year to be loved by audiences. That's kind of the main appeal of Love and Monsters, as it put audiences into a blast of a world for about two hours.

The film literally tells the tale of a protagonist (Dylan O'Brien) who embarks on a quest through a monster-filled world to reunite with the woman he loves. Even if audiences weren't totally behind it, critics found it fun, appreciated the surprising emotional depth, and it even earned an Oscar nomination.

Based on the show of the same name from the '70s, this film has a pretty strong Rotten Tomatoes score even though it's not exactly loved by critics. It seems like something for casual viewers but they have scored it less favorably, not appreciating the goofiness of it all nearly as much.

Bumblebee (2018) - RT: 93%/IMDb: 6.7

Hailee Steinfeld in Bumblebee

For the most part, the Transformers franchise was basically designed to appease audiences and not critics. That's why basically every film in the series helmed by Michael Bay was a blockbuster box office hit while receiving poor scores from those who reviewed it.

Interestingly, Bumblebee flipped that script. The movie brought in the least money of the franchise but has the best score from critics who praised Hailee Steinfeld's performance, the '80s setting, and heartwarming story. It rebooted things in a pleasing way, especially in the eyes of critics.

It's kind of odd that fans haven't given Spy Kids a better rating on IMDb. It doesn't seem like a film that is meant to be taken all that seriously as it's a family-friendly action-comedy centered around kids.

Critics were pleased with Robert Rodriguez's work as a filmmaker here, the fun nature of it all, and the score. Although audiences liked it enough to make it a box office success that spawned multiple sequels, they have kept it at a paltry 5.6 score on IMDb, which is disappointing.

When Snakes on a Plane was being promoted, it seemed like everyone had a few jokes to crack. The title was hilarious because the entire concept of a plane being filled with deadly snakes seemed too goofy to succeed.

Of course, that ended up not quite being the case as Samuel L. Jackson brought his signature style to make it work better than most figured. Some people have seemingly never gotten into the absurd nature of it all but enough critics found it fun to get it a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating.
