Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) will have an exciting set of powers. After multiple significant delays, the sequel to 2019's Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will hit theaters in June 2023. It will center on the young Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he must traverse the multiverse at the behest of Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to face a new threat. The duo will be joined by Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), Jefferson Davis (Brian Tyree Henry), and The Spot (Jason Schwartzman).

Spider-Man 2099 made his first full appearance in the 1992 comics imprint Marvel 2099 which portrayed a possible future of the Marvel universe. The hero was one of four characters to get their own line of comics within the series including Doctor Doom, Punisher, and Ravage. Spider-Man 2099 proved popular with readers and has periodically returned in multiple comic runs, as well as the Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors television series and various video games. The character made his cinematic debut in an Into the Spider-Verse post-credits scene, where he was voiced by Isaac. Spider-Man 2099 also appeared heavily in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where he appeared to attack Miles Morales.

While at the Annecy Festival, the annual animated film festival in France, Sony gave attendees a new look at the upcoming film. As part of a series of posts during the event, Sony detailed Spider-Man 2099's powers in the upcoming film. The studio said:

Unlike other Spideys, Miguel O'Hara wasn’t bitten by a radioactive bug and doesn't have Spidey Sense. But with advanced tech and his own prowess, he's got super strength! wall-climbing claws! a giant laser web! a flying wing-suit!!

Spider-Man 2099 Miguel Ohara and Miles Morales in Spider-Verse 2 trailer

Spider-Man 2099's lack of Spidey Sense stays true to the comics, as Miguel O'Hara doe not have that ability. According to the original source material, O'Hara had 50% of his DNA inadvertently changed to that of a spider. This gave him spider-like abilities including increased speed, strength, and agility, similar to that of Spider-Man. He also gained advanced hearing and vision as well as protruding claws from his fingers and toes which the original Spider-Man does not have. However, the announcement from Sony implies that O'Hara may have gained his superhuman abilities in the upcoming film through the use of advanced technology instead of genetic tampering.

Whether Sony has changed O'Hara's powers remains to be seen, but based on the few promotional materials that have been released, Spider-Man 2099 appears faithful to the original Marvel comics. Regardless, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is shaping up to be another exciting yet eclectic film full of Spider-people and an assortment of villains from the web-slinging hero's rogues gallery. Audiences will get to see Spider-Man 2099's powers in action when the film finally hits theaters next year.
