The iPhone 13 Pro camera app can capture high-quality Apple ProRAW and ProRes media files that can be accessed on a PC by using the iCloud for Windows app. Doing so might speed up access or simply make it easier to transfer those professional-grade files to a Windows computer from an iPhone. The iPhone 12 can also create ProRAW files so a large number of users can benefit from getting the app and using this method.

Apple develops most of its apps for its own operating systems but does make a few to help with the compatibility of its iPhone and a Windows PC. For example, iTunes is available for Windows and is a way to enjoy Apple Music from a PC. iCloud Passwords is an Edge extension that allows easy access to passwords stored by the iPhone. iCloud for Windows connects a PC to Apple's online storage with 5 gigabytes included for free. Subscriptions are competitively priced for more storage, which might be needed if archiving more than a few ProRAW photos and ProRes videos.

To access ProRAW and ProRes media from iCloud for Windows, version 13 or higher of the app must be installed on a Windows PC and the files should be uploaded to iCloud. Earlier versions of the app can connect to iCloud and download standard photos and videos but can't access these relatively new formats. With version 13 or higher, ProRAW photos and ProRes video taken with an iPhone 12 Pro or 13 Pro can be seen and downloaded just like other media. iCloud for Windows must be logged into the same Apple ID and Apple Photos should be enabled. That's all that's required to begin downloading Apple ProRAW and ProRes media to the PC in an iCloud Photos subfolder within the user folder. iCloud for Windows can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

What Are ProRes & ProRAW?

Apple ProRAW for iPhone 12 Pro & Pro Max

Apple created ProRes many years ago for its professional video editing apps like Final Cut Pro, which is used in Hollywood productions. The value is that videos can be color-graded, layered, and manipulated in various ways without compression artifacts becoming apparent. The more of the editing pipeline that can remain in ProRes, the higher-quality the final output will be. The trade-off is that these huge files require serious processing power and the iPhone 13 Pro is the first smartphone capable of sustaining the needed throughput to handle ProRes. ProRes can also be used in other high-end video editors, so there is value for Windows PC users to make use of this format as well.

ProRAW is a somewhat equivalent format for photography and can be captured by both the iPhone 12 Pro and 13 Pro. RAW photos existed long before Apple invented ProRAW, which includes Apple's computational photography adjustments along with the raw sensor data, allowing the user to enjoy the best of both world's - automated image processing as well as the un-retouched data if preferred to Apple's corrections. With iCloud for Windows 13, PC users can automatically download all iPhone 13 Pro media types without the need for connecting a Lighting cable.
