Ubisoft is exploring the universe of Assassin's Creed Valhalla even more, with all-new novels, graphic novels, manhua, webtoons, comics, and podcasts set in the same game universe. This news comes following the announcement that Ubisoft will not be releasing a new Assassin’s Creed game this year. Instead, it appears they will be giving fans more content in other forms.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the latest Assassin’s Creed game in the franchise, with players taking control of a Viking Raider invading the country of Britain along with their clan. The story is set in the years 872 to 878 AD and follows the historical records of tension between the Nordic Viking invaders and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Britain. Players raid other settlements and churches to bring back resources to their own settlement, which expands with each conquest. These expansions increase the power of the main character, thereby opening up more options of weapons, abilities, and activities. This was a first for the series and may continue in the next Assassin’s Creed installment, whenever that is.

According to the official Ubisoft blog, the gaming developers are planning a big year in divisive content for the Assassin’s Creed universe. Instead of releasing a new title, the studio is working with a number of companies to release other forms of media, such as graphic novels, comics, manhaus, webtoons, and podcasts all set within the same universe. These formats will feature a variety of authors, illustrators, and content creators from around the world with the help of various publishing partners.

This new wave of content will be classified under three different labels to help give context to the universe. There will be Classics, which are direct adaptations based on the Assassin’s Creed video games, barely divulging from the stories told in these games. The Chronicles will tell the stories of new adventures that feature favorite and iconic Assassins from the franchise. Lastly, there will be Originals, which will focus on new narratives following new characters and time periods all within the Assassin’s Creed universe. These three labels will also be applied to existing content from Ubisoft, backdating some older work in the series.

This news comes after last year’s announcement of an Assassin’s Creed TV show in the works with Netflix. Ubisoft seems to be exploring other forms of content beyond just video games for its franchises, although fans were mixed on the Assassin’s Creed movie back in 2016. Hopefully, these new forms of content remember what makes the games so successful and sticks to the source material unlike the movie did.
