Ubisoft has recently added Altaïr's outfit to Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Eivor isn't a full fledged member of the Brotherhood, but they still look incredible sporting the master Assassin's robes from the 12th century. Altaïr was the protagonist of the very first Assassin's Creed game, which released way back in 2007. The series has since grown to be extremely popular and has evolved quite a bit since its first incarnation, with non-Assassin protagonists being only one part of its transformation.

Altaïr's robes can be redeemed for free from the in-game Animus Store as part of the Godly Reward pack. This free cosmetic item comes post-release in anticipation of Valhalla's first major DLCWrath of the Druids. Altaïr never left the Holy Land, but now players will be able to take his likeness all across Norway, England, and soon Ireland. Following Wrath of the DruidsValhalla's second major DLC will focus on the Viking's siege of Paris.

Altaïr's outfit joins Valhalla's cosmetic ranks on the heels of a clothing transmogrification feature being added to the game. The feature was highly requested by fans of the series, since it was available in Assassin's Creed Odyssey yet noticeably absent from Assassin's Creed Valhalla on launch. Now there are plenty of options for players who prefer form over function but don't want to jeopardize their character build.

While it is nice that Ubisoft still pays tribute to the character that instigated the flagship franchise, Altaïr's outfit only serves as a reminder of what the games used to be. Before Assassin's Creed 3 unceremoniously killed any interest in the modern day story, the first four games - Assassin's Creed2Brotherhood, and Revelations - were building to something, and actually managed to make the Animus a fun component of the games. Even after the modern day narrative was made to feel somewhat pointless, the Assassin's Creed games still manage to capture some of the series' old magic through the perpetuation of its gameplay systems.

Everything changed with Assassin's Creed Origins, when the series added many more RPG elements and the locales shifted from tightly-packed urban areas to vast open-world wilderness. The merits of each Assassin's Creed entry can be (and is) hotly debated, but it is undeniable that the newer installments involve much less focus on what used to be integral to an Assassin's Creed title. While Altaïr's outfit is an incredible throwback for longtime fans, its addition to Assassin's Creed Valhalla also evokes painful nostalgia for what many may consider the franchise's golden era.
