Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco engage in some father-son bonding in the About My Father trailer. The upcoming comedy is co-written by the accomplished Italian-American stand-up, Maniscalco, loosely based on his own life and his relationship with his father, who is played by De Niro. About My Father was first announced in 2018, and after several years in development, the star-studded comedy is almost ready for audiences to see.

Now, Lionsgate has released the first official About My Father trailer, which can be seen below:

Clocking in at over two and a half minutes long, the trailer introduces the film's basic premise as comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, who is playing himself, is convinced by his fiancée (played by Leslie Bibb) to bring his old-fashioned immigrant father, Salvo (De Niro), on an elaborate weekend getaway with her affluent and eccentric family. This results in a culture clash and some unexpected family bonding.

Led by Maniscalco and De Niro as father and son, About My Father's ensemble cast also includes Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall, Jane the Virgin's Brett Dier, Workaholics star Anders Holm, and Succession's David Rasche as Sebastian's soon-to-be-in-laws. The comedy is helmed by Laura Terruso, who has directed films such as Netflix's Work It, Good Girls Get High, and Fits and Starts. Austen Earl co-wrote the script in collaboration with Maniscalco.

An eight-time Academy Award-nominated actor for films like The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Irishman, De Niro has also frequently ventured into comedies throughout his illustrious career to mixed results. Meet the Parents, which features a similar premise as About My Father, was a massive commercial and critical success that spawned multiple sequels. On the other hand, De Niro has also recently starred in a few comedies that weren't very well received, including The War with Grandpa and Dirty Grandpa. Which category About My Father falls into for De Niro remains to be seen when his latest comedy releases in theaters on May 26.
