Quinta Brunson teases new story details for Abbott Elementary season 2. Brunson created the school-set mockumentary for ABC in 2020 and has watched as the show became a big hit following its late 2021 debut. Abbott Elementary has had ABC's highest ratings since Modern Family's series finale as the great word of mouth for Brunson's series continued to spread. She stars as Janine Teagues, an optimistic second-grade teacher at Abbott Elementary who does all she can to help her students and colleagues. Abbott Elementary season 1 became such a hit for ABC that the series was officially renewed for a second season ahead of the season 1 finale.

Although Abbott Elementary season 2 is confirmed, viewers had to wait until the season finale to get a better sense of what Brunson has in store for the future. Principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) already managed to save her job after blackmailing the superintendent, while Gregory (Tyler James Williams) agreed to come on full-time as Abbott's first-grade teacher. The Abbott Elementary season 1 finale took the students and teachers on a field trip to the zoo, which included some big revelations that will impact where these characters and storylines go in Abbott Elementary season 2. And now that the first season is finished, additional teases for season 2 are coming in.

Following the season 1 finale airing on ABC, Quinta Brunson spoke to EW about the experience of making the show and what audiences can expect from Abbott Elementary season 2's story. Brunson didn't want to reveal too much specifically about what challenges and hijinx will ensue going forward, such as if Tariq (Zack Fox) will return after Janine broke up with him and if Janine and Gregory's romance could begin. However, she did offer a few specific story details for Abbott Elementary season 2 in regards to how Janine, Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), and Jacob (Chris Perfetti) will develop.

I'm excited to explore Janine's growth. I'm excited to have some things thrown at her that were thrown at me when I was 25 and single. I'm excited to watch Barbara — you know, in the finale, she confronts almost being near retirement. In the second season, I want that to start to manifest in different ways, you know? What does it look like when kids are coming into your class who identify as they/them for Barbara and older women who may not be used to that? Things like that. How is she going to grow from that? She has to grow too for this new world. Lisa [Ann Walter]'s character, Melissa, she's finding love and maintaining her support of Barbara and also being a divorced woman. For Jacob, I'm excited to see what we can throw at him to make him grow as a teacher. I'm just excited to see these people grow as teachers, which also means watching them grow as individuals outside of the school.

Viewers will certainly be interested to see what comes next for all of Abbott Elementary's characters following the season 1 finale. Based on additional comments from Brunson, it sounds like Janine's story will revolve around her finding herself after finally breaking up with Tariq and figuring out who she really is as an individual. Gregory's story will follow him making the commitment to staying at Abbott Elementary full-time, but his relationship with Barbara's daughter also appears to be moving forward. Abbott Elementary season 2 could continue to slow-play Janine and Gregory's potential romantic relationship as a result.

As for the rest of Abbott Elementary's characters, it appears Brunson wants to explore gender and identity more in season 2, as she mentions Barbara having students that identify with they/them pronouns. There's also a tease for Melissa potentially finding love again following her divorce, which could mean the introduction of a new character. Jacob's teaching career will also evolve, and viewers can also likely expect to see more of his relationship with Zach. Brunson doesn't offer any tease for what the future holds for Ava Coleman in Abbott Elementary season 2, but she has great potential to grow into her job title and truly lead the school while still having plenty of fun.
