Just over a month ago, Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson was spotted having lunch with Matthew Vaughn and James McAvoy who had recently signed to play Professor X in X-Men: First Class. With Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn helming the X-Men prequel, the obvious connection was made and speculation put Johnson as a possible candidate to play Cyclops, the leader of the X-Men.
This wasn't the only connection however, as Bryan Singer (who was directing X-Men: First Class but is now only producing) had met with with Aaron Johnson as well for Jack the Giant Killer - a movie Singer is directing and using to help find candidates to play roles such as Cyclops and Jean Grey in First Class.
Now, reports are surfacing that indicate Johnson is "locked" for the role. Ain't it Cool News received info claiming that the British actor definitely has the Cyclops gig. Before repeating a rumor that's already been circulated, AICN verified it with an insider in the know, making this news much more legit.
Here's the initial insider claim:
"I work in the [REDACTED] and we heard today that Matthew Vaughn found his young Cyclops and it shouldn't be any surprise because he worked with him before. It's Aaron Johnson. This is one hundred percent locked at this point. Thought you guys should know."
It isn't a surprise as stated in the above note and if true, we can expect confirmation soon - likely at Comic-Con in two weeks where Vaughn put on a show with his Kick-Ass unveiling last year, becoming a highlight of the event.
With Johnson not getting the Spider-Man role, it makes sense for him to nab a leading part in First Class so he and Vaughn can link up their schedules to work on this project together before getting to work on Kick-Ass 2 next year.
What do you think of Aaron Johnson kicking ass as Cyclops and re-teaming with Matthew Vaughn?
X-Men: First Class opens June 3, 2011.
