The countdown to Christmas begins and Netflix has a Bill Murray shaped present for everyone! The charmingly sardonic actor (whose next big screen appearance will be in Rock the Kasbah) has reunited with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for an exclusive Christmas variety show, titled A Very Murray Christmas.
This festive extravaganza will include an array of A List guests from Murray and Coppola's vast network of friends and past collaborators. This line-up - which is highlighted in the newly-released trailer for the special (see above) - reads like a dream of comedic talent to compliment Murray's unique brand of humor - and there will even be some seasonal musical numbers, too!
Christmas has the tendency to bring out the sentimental streak in anyone, apparently including the usually enigmatic Copploa - who, while speaking to People, explained the origins of A Very Murray Christmas as follows:
"It just started from wanting to see Bill sing and our fondness for those old Christmas specials that were on TV in the '70s and '80s."
Coppola co-wrote the holiday special with Murray and Mitch Glazer (Scrooged). The plot will follow Murray (playing himself) as he prepares to host a live, holiday broadcast. Here is the official synopsis:
"This winter, Bill Murray brings an extra-special dose of holiday cheer to Netflix with the premiere of an all-star musically-driven holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas. Set inside New York City’s iconic Carlyle hotel, A Very Murray Christmas opens with Murray preparing to host a live, international holiday broadcast. After a blizzard shuts down the production, he makes the best of the situation by singing and celebrating with friends, hotel employees and anyone else who drops by."
These fellow celebrators, some of which can be seen in the above trailer, include George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Miley Cyrus, Chris Rock, Jason Schwartzman, Paul Shaffer, Maya Rudolph, Rashida Jones and many more. The old fashioned holiday variety show is now fully in the territory of revisited comedic nostalgia - and Murray has enough beloved distinction to pull off this style of jovially, tongue in cheek extravaganza. A Very Murray Christmas should be a healthy mix of Murray's ironic humor and Coppola's visual panache. Coppola is also renowned for her visionary use of music within her films, so the musical numbers ought to be unique in their own right.
Retro holiday specials may not be to everybody's taste - but even the biggest humbugs should find it hard to refuse a gift wrapped Murray and Coppola Christmas collaberation!
A Very Murray Christmas will debut exclusively on Netflix on December 4th, 2015.
