2021's A Quiet Place Part 2 has proven to be just as popular and successful as the original movie, with the sequel taking the story to another level and continuing to develop the characters that lived in this world. The sequel did a great job at developing the backstory of how things began, while also providing a genuine solution in order to defeat the aliens.
With the sequel being another hit, there is an obvious question mark over the potential of this franchise then becoming a trilogy in the future. Adding another layer to the story with one more movie is something that could happen, but is it necessary?
Needs To Be A Trilogy: Explore More Of The Past
Sure, everyone now knows how the aliens can be destroyed, but that doesn't mean that they can't still be terrifying. One way to make that happen would be by harkening back to the past at times, just as the recent sequel did, which adds more backstory to everything.
Showing more of Emmett's character and bringing his family into the limelight more would be an intriguing way of doing this. It would make his personal character a lot more fun, while this would also make things remain as tense, all while tying up the story in the present.
Doesn't Need To Be A Trilogy: Sound Isn't As Scary
One of the main reasons that this franchise has been so successful is the use and importance of sound. It isn't just a gimmick that is forced in due to the title of the movie, it's something that is implemented brilliantly. However, now that there is a genuine way to kill the aliens, the need to be silent is gone.
The characters will likely want to attract several aliens in order to take them down now they have their own weapon. Because of that, the big reason that these movies have been so scary will be eliminated, which is why a third might not be needed.
Needs To Be A Trilogy: Make The Humans The Villains
The first two movies have really pushed the use of sound, making the aliens the main villains and the source of all the fear in the story. However, now they can be defeated, there is a clear option in how to pivot in making the humans the scary part next.
This was something that got set up in the second movie with the marina characters, and the scene was certainly tense enough to work. However, it didn't explore their backstory or their true motives, which means there is still enough open to push this further.
Doesn't Need To Be A Trilogy: Quality Over Quantity
A big risk that comes with a franchise adding more movies on a regular basis is that there's a risk the quality will begin to drop, which then harms the reputation of the franchise in general. This is a trope that happens within the horror genre more so than any other, and that's a risk that a third movie would be taking.
Because this is such a specific type of horror, rather than being a slasher or a ghost story, it is even harder for it to carve out another intriguing plot and put it all together. With two well-received movies in the bank, sometimes quality is key, rather than quantity.
Needs To Be A Trilogy: Do The Abbott Family Get Back Together?
At the end of A Quiet Place Part 2, the Abbott family are all safe, but they're not together. While Evelyn's two older children are able to destroy aliens themselves, getting them all back together isn't as simple as it might appear to be.
Emmett and Regan made plenty of enemies on the marina which separates them, plus, Regan can either leave her hearing aid at the radio station, helping everyone else, or take it with her to use. The inability to do both puts her in a tough spot, and a third movie would provide answers as to if they're able to reunite.
Doesn't Need To Be A Trilogy: Most Questions Have Been Answered
Because the sequel decided to go back to the past and show how things began for the Abbott family, the vast majority of questions for fans have now been answered in this franchise. People know when it began and what that situation was like, while they also know how the aliens can be killed.
With the state of other humans being cleared up as well, it's hard to truly find a reason to justify a third movie being made. A trilogy only needs to happen if there's a lot of questions left, and that wasn't the case with this franchise.
Needs To Be A Trilogy: What If The Aliens Evolve?
As is the case with most animals, when something begins to have a negative impact, they tend to adapt in order to protect themselves. That could be the case with the alien creatures who might be able to adapt to the noise situation in order to not have it impact them.
Having them evolve would allow the aliens to remain as scary as possible, all while forcing the humans to come up with a new plan, which is something that would keep the franchise terrifying.
Doesn't Need To Be A Trilogy: Opening The World Will Hurt The Characters
While it's clear that the aliens have destroyed large areas and killed countless people, this franchise has done an amazing job of making everything feel small and all about the Abbott family. It has allowed the characters and their individual feelings to be explored in huge detail.
The sequel saw the world be opened up slightly and part of that personal touch was lost, particularly with Evelyn's character. If a third movie happens, the world would no doubt be explored further, and that would risk harming the main characters a bit further.
Needs To Be A Trilogy: How Does The Rest Of The World Learn?
The big hook heading into a possible third movie would be the need for Regan and Emmett to somehow get the message about the noise to everybody else. That isn't as simple as it seems, mainly because it's unclear how far the apocalypse has reached and the effect it has had.
With so many humans turning and becoming genuine enemies to other humans themselves, would they want to receive the message? A trilogy could all be about how the Earth puts itself back together and that would be an intriguing movie to watch.
Doesn't Need To Be A Trilogy: They Know How To Defeat The Aliens
While the second movie doesn't show all of the aliens being destroyed, what it does do is confirm that the frequency from the hearing aid can seriously weaken them. This then opens them up to be destroyed, which is something that is far easier, and that has answered the biggest question in this franchise.
People have wanted to know how the aliens could be killed and the sequel answered that therefore there is nothing really for a third movie to accomplish. The aliens no longer present the same fear due to the fact audiences know how they will be beaten.
