The world has completely changed from the flashback scene to when the Abbott family ends up meeting Emmett. They head to his area in a desperate bid of hope, feeling that there could be some possibility of survival and help when meeting him.

However, Emmett is feeling a little lost now due to the fact that he has lost both his wife and child. He is crystal clear with Evelyn about how he sees things, telling them that there is nothing left out there, showcasing his lack of belief at the start of the movie.

Another excellent quote that Emmett brings to the movie is this one. Cillian Murphy delivers an excellent performance with this character, and he delivers this line in a firm but fair manner, making it clear that even the humans who are still alive aren't the same.

This is something that proves to be correct when they encounter the group in the marina, who are trying to ambush him and Regan. Clearly, Emmett has seen this plenty of times before, proving that he has lost hope in people generally.

It acts as a reminder about how much Lee loved his daughter and the belief that he had in her as a person. Plus, it works in waking Emmett up about how he respected his friend and that leads to him heading out and starting the main adventure within this movie.
