Kalani Faagata and Asuelu Pulaa from the 90 Day Fiancé franchise have always had trouble in their marriage and a certain dynamic that keeps divorce on the forefront of everyone's minds. Though the couple has made some strides together and made their marriage last several years, it always seems to be one step forward and two steps back for Kalani and Asuelu, and it’s unclear how much longer they can continue on this way.
The couple’s relationship had difficult beginnings, and things haven't gotten any easier after they got married. Asuelu has had a tough time adjusting to life in the U.S. and finding employment, while Kalani feels like she does all the heavy lifting when it comes to taking care of their two boys. It also doesn’t help that Asuelu’s family in Samoa keep hitting him up for money. On the latest season of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, their relationship seemed better, but on a recent episode of 90 Day Diaries, fans got an update that Kalani and Asuelu are still struggling. Not to mention, Asuelu blocked Kalani on Instagram, so the two may be closer to a divorce than anyone realized.
Communication is obviously a big issue for Kalani and Asuelu, and there’s a major disconnect between the two. On 90 Day Diaries, when Kalani sat down with Asuelu and asked him how he thought their relationship was going, he thought everything was fine. However, Kalani has been really struggling, even making a comment that she’s “at a breaking point.” While Kalani does want to put in the effort to work on things, her husband is usually quick to get frustrated and shut down. For example, during a recent episode, Asuelu, who was shocked Kalani wanted a baby, simply walked away from their conversation. Communication is a two-way street, and a marriage can’t work when one person is too stubborn to work on themselves or even listen to the concerns of their partner.
It’s been easy for Asuelu to think everything was fine between them as their problems are one-sided. Asuelu hasn’t assumed the same responsibilities as Kalani, who told her husband, “I’m doing everything almost completely by myself.” While she thinks Asuelu is lazy, Kalani is also concerned for the safety of their kids when they’re being watched by him. Kalani said, “something bad usually happens” when she lets Asuelu watch them, and it’s “scary” for her to leave the kids alone with him. This issue is Kalani feels their distribution of housework and obligations is not equal. While Asuelu has hobbies and interests that get him out of the house, Kalani is stuck at home watching the kids all the time as she can’t trust Asuelu to do it himself.
Until Kalani and Asuelu can establish balance in their relationship, the 90 Day Fiancé couple will always be on the edge of divorce. They’ve reached an impasse because they can’t communicate about their issues, and it’s damaging their marriage. Kalani feels trapped and stressed out, and Asuelu doesn’t feel he deserves the criticism he gets. Kalani and Asuelu’s relationship is in serious jeopardy, and with Asuelu’s latest social media temper tantrum, he and Kalani may be headed towards a breakup.
