Varya Malina, star of 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days season four, took to Instagram to teach her fans about Old New Year. Most couples from the 90 Day Fiance franchise appear on several of the show's spin-offs and follow-up tell-all episodes. Varya and her fiance Geoffrey Paschel, however, have only appeared in that one season. Geoffrey has a troubling past, filled with allegations of assault and protection orders from previous girlfriends and his ex-wife. This didn’t sit well with fans, who made a successful petition to remove him from follow-up episodes of 90 Day Fiance.
Since their TV appearance, the couple has not spoken publicly about their relationship status. While Varya was still invited to the 90 Day Fiance tell-all episode, she refused to show up without Geoffrey, who was not invited. Fans have since been left in the dark about where the couple's relationship stands. Even the couple’s social media accounts have carefully avoided the topic. Varya’s social media mostly focuses on fashion, tidbits about her Russian culture, and vacation pictures, such as snowboarding pics from Siberia. She also used to post pictures from her career as a wedding host but has not been able to do much of that lately due to the pandemic. Only rarely does she share pictures of her with Geoffrey.
On January 14, Varya posted on her Instagram about Old New Year. She said, “Not many people know where this tradition comes from or what it entails, but I can assure you this monster is a fun one celebrate!” Most people celebrate New Year according to the Gregorian calendar, which was implemented by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Before that, the Julian calendar was the standard, which had been in use since 46 BC, implemented by Julius Caesar. Some people still note certain dates according to the Julian calendar. Old New Year is celebrated on January 14.
Varya, who is known for her fashion, posted a stylish picture of herself outside under some decorative hanging lights to accompany her post about Old New Year. She talked about the Russian affinity for reusing old items. She gave examples of using an old T-shirt for a rag and using her grandfather’s old clothes to tie tomato plants to stakes. She joked about it being a hoarding gene. She closed the post by saying, “Why should we give up the holiday if it’s another reason to party? Happy Old New Year, friends!”
