Varya Malina and Geoffrey Paschel were on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 4, but weren’t invited to the Tell All due to assault charges against Geoffrey. In the meantime, Varya has been using her Instagram account to share other parts of her life, as well as interesting information about Russian culture. She has shared about Russia Day and Old New Year. Recently, she posted a moving story that she overheard in a Saint Petersburg museum.

During World War II, the Nazis surrounded the Russian city of Leningrad. The population was forced to fight back to keep the enemy from taking the city. For almost two and a half years, the Nazis kept up their blockade, which stopped the people of Leningrad from receiving food or other necessities. Varya, who has talked about the strength of her mother and shared how she didn’t meet her father until she was 3, overheard a person talking about their own amazing grandmother. The grandmother survived the Siege of Leningrad, thanks to help from her cat.

The cat was named Vaska and would hunt mice, rats, and birds, and bring them back to the grandmother and her daughter. Since there was no other food, the grandmother and daughter would make stew or goulash out of the vermin, and this kept them from starving to death. The cat also sensed air raids before the alarms were sounded, which made it simpler for the grandmother and daughter to seek shelter (with their pet in tow) just in time (before the bombs began dropping). Thanks to the help of Vaska the cat, the women survived. Fans can read the whole amazing story on the Varya Malina Instagram page. See the touching post below:

Russia still has problems and some of them come from within. One Russian artist made a video mashup comparing the Russian police to Star Wars’ Empire. On Russia Day, the pantsuit-loving reality star posted about the future she hoped Russia would have: “For me, the beautiful Russia of the future is fair elections; a government that respects the citizens; the feeling that you have rights and you can protect these rights.”

Despite all the drama that Varya (who may just want some kids in the future) has gone through, on and off 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, she has kept her focus on what is important. Even during hard times, she has stayed positive, talking about the things that everyone can learn from history, and planning an amazing future.
