Steven Johnston is continuing to alarm 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way viewers with his treatment of Alina. The Mormon man initially revealed himself to be quirky, though his quirks quickly turned into something more menacing. Steven has been accused of using his religion to control Alina, as he expects her to follow the strict rules of his faith though he doesn’t abide by them. Now 90 Day Fiancé fans are concerned over the way Steven treated Alina and her mother Anna.
Viewers have grown increasingly frustrated over the way Steven tries to control Alina, which is why fans were happy to see Anna visit the young couple in Turkey and give Steven a hard time. Anna immediately saw through Steven’s tactics when he tried to get her to join Alina in converting to the Mormon faith. The two women then joined forces to call Steven out for banning Alina from drinking alcohol or coffee when he has had sex with multiple women and broken his chastity vows. While Anna was praised for calling Steven out, viewers were disappointed when Alina decided to stay with Steven in Turkey rather than accompany her mother Anna back to Russia.
Reddit user U/-PapaDontPeach- took to Reddit to post a clip of Steven with Anna and Alina that shows Steven pushing Anna before grabbing Alina. "Ummm, I don't want to think that Steven just shoved Anna and grabbed Alina's arm BUT...Steven just shoved Anna and grabbed Alina's arm," the user captioned the video. Many commenters raised the alarm flags about the way Steven behaved. "Noticed this too. IMO Steven gets away with a lot in part because he’s skinny and soft spoken. He doesn’t give off 'aggressive' vibes," one user wrote before noting the troubling way he acts and speaks. Numerous fans expressed concern that Steven was controlling and might be harboring darker intentions.
While Steven's behavior disturbed some viewers, others were taken aback by how strangely Steven acts on camera. "Steven seems like an alien who observed human behavior for a few days and then came down off his ship in a human skin suit and started larping humans," one commenter noted. Others slammed the American for once again failing to consider Alina's needs when it came to saying goodbye to her mother. "Personal. Space. Let a mother and daughter say their goodbyes in peace. He should be nowhere near them. 🚩," another commenter wrote. Steven has been called out in the past for putting his own desires and wants above Alina's happiness or safety.
Steven has overall earned consistent fan criticism for the way he continues to treat Alina. While viewers have largely been on her side, many are losing patience with Alina since she refuses to recognize Steven’s red flags and break up with him. This has caused The Other Way viewers to voice their frustration and call for the franchise to cast less problematic people than Steven. While viewers have largely panned 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way season 3, many are looking forward to meeting the new couples that will debut on 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days season 5 on December 12 on TLC.
