Viewers were stunned during a recent episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days when Jasmine Pineda berated her fiancé Gino Palazzolo for letting his ex-wife keep his last name after getting divorced, but Jasmine claims it was all due to a simple cultural misunderstanding. Jasmine has gotten a lot of criticism from 90 Day Fiancé fans for her behavior on and off the show, and her latest tantrum about Gino’s ex’s name was called out as being completely unreasonable. However, according to Jasmine, it’s a difference in cultural and legal customs that led to her outburst.

Jasmine has gained a reputation during season 5 as an exceptionally jealous cast member. Most viewers thought Jasmine had reached a new level of unreasonable, because in the U.S., Gino has no control over whether his ex-wife does or does not decide to keep using his last name. It can be an enormous pain to change your name after a divorce, so it’s not at all surprising that Gino’s ex is still going by Palazzolo. On Instagram, Jasmine addressed her blowup with Gino and explained that there are different customs in Panama. “When you get divorced in [Panama], your last name gets immediately reversed to your birth last name,” she said in an Instagram story. Jasmine also took responsibility for blowing things out of proportion. “Not lame excuse for my craziness,” she added, “but it was kinda cultural shock.

The season 5 star claimed she had no idea that Gino’s ex-wife’s last name wasn’t up to Gino, and it seems many fans pointed out her misconception to her. A lot of viewers were very upset with Jasmine’s tantrum about Gino’s ex and considered it yet another example of Jasmine’s extreme jealousy. However, if Jasmine’s claims are accurate, and reverting to maiden names is the legal norm in Panama, it makes her anger less unreasonable. From her point of view, it would be very suspect for Gino to buck tradition and let his ex keep his last name, and might be an indication of lingering feelings.

However, even taking into account the cultural differences, Jasmine’s response was pretty extreme. It’s not uncommon for the Panamanian 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star to go from zero to 60 and Gino is often paralyzed in the face of Jasmine’s rage. There are many fans who will question whether Jasmine’s blowup was really due to cultural differences, and Jasmine’s explanation may fall on deaf ears.
