90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? star Jovi Dufren’s mother Gwen doubting Yara Zaya’s parenting skills on episode 12 may have put her fan-favorite status at risk. Considered one of the best cast members and mothers-in-law on 90 Day Fiancé, Gwen ruffled a few feathers when she argued with Yara about Mylah sleeping in her parent’s bed during Ukrainian Christmas. While Yara is usually the one facing the music for being rude and condescending towards Gwen, Jovi’s mom and his cousin Claire and Chris’ behavior at dinner has been labeled as “xenophobic” by Reddit users.

With Jovi having already missed celebrating Christmas with his family due to him being away for his job, Yara’s Ukrainian Christmas idea, at first, didn’t seem too bad. After Yara chose their new apartment near New Orleans all by herself, Jovi already has a hard time adjusting. So meeting his family over dinner on the Feast of the Epiphany, ending with Yara kicking them out at 6 pm wasn’t exactly what the 90 Day Fiancé star expected. The caviar dish that Yara had prepared was met with odd reactions by Gwen, Claire, and Chris, as the young mom kept saying “it’s not that bad” since rich people in Ukraine ate it. Amidst this awkward meal, Gwen broaching the subject of Mylah sleeping in Yara and Jovi’s bed and asking, “how do you have mommy and daddy time?” came across as nosy.

Yara defended her decision for not giving Mylah her own bed but Gwen argued that the little girl wouldn’t grow up to be “very independent” and Jovi mocked his wife while insulting her by calling her a “psycho.” With a frustrated look on her face, Yara then insisted it was time for Mylah to sleep, and went ahead and kicked out Gwen and Jovi’s cousins who’d driven two hours to get there. However, Yara’s actions were justified by 90 Day Fiancé viewer Probenecid123 on Reddit, who explained that Gwen was “being a little annoying in the episode” by indulging in “lots of mom-shaming.” The scene was “upsetting to watch” as per another fan, who added that “people cosleep all the time” and that Yara did it because Jovi is technically always away for work, leaving the new mom and her baby alone.

She’s acting like some sort of parenting police,” observed another TLC viewer, while someone else mentioned that, “Gwen needs to stop trying to be the third parent.” On another Reddit thread where the OP cosmicslaughter69 called out “Jovi’s xenophobic family,” a 90 Day Fiancé fan blamed Gwen for being “incredibly rude” when she said, “that fish is so nasty” behind Yara’s back when she’d gone inside to get Mylah ready for bed. However, this is when some fans were also reminded of Yara apparently calling Gwen’s food “disgusting” when she’d gone to meet her for the first time on 90 Day Fiancé season 8.

When Gwen had cooked the fricassee for Yara, the Kyiv resident thought it was chocolate, and later told Jovi in private that the food was “not so much tasty.” The 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? star had not felt like Gwen’s food had “much flavors” and it was almost like one was “eating nothing.” Jovi had suggested that it could have been due to Yara having “a different acquired taste” since she was from Ukraine. But Jovi not defending Yara’s cooking as he had done with his mother’s on 90 Day Fiancé, perhaps also hints at more criticism also coming his way.
