Newcomer Ella Johnson from 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days season 5 finally responded to accusations of her fetishizing Asian men but only to get panned by fans all over again. The 90 Day Fiancé sneak peeks had already shown Ella saying she has an “Asian obsession” and claiming she hit the “jackpot” after meeting boyfriend Johnny. Ella’s introduction, however, revealed that while her ideal type of man is one straight out of a Japanese anime with a fox demon living inside him, she had settled for Chinese man Johnny. Fans asked Ella to understand that not all Asians are the same and to stop referring to her ex-boyfriend as the “Indian guy.” But some also accused Ella of being racist on her Instagram.
This season of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days will document the difficulties Ella and Johnny face when trying to meet for the first time, face to face, due to COVID. Since Ella has found her “Asian prince” on her “White Women Asian Men” page and he too, happens to love anime, she wants to get married to him. A single father Johnny has already discussed having kids with Ella and she thinks he will help her lose her extra pounds by cooking her “Asian” food, which is “like frikken healthy” with lots of “vegetables and stuff.” Ella also spoke of how she and Johnny have online sex and it was generally a cringe-inducing scene for many viewers with her dildo collection described in detail.
Compared to most of her 90 Day Fiancé co-stars, Ella’s Instagram hasn’t blown up yet. But some critics found a way to Ella and may have left negative comments on her page which she’s supposedly deleted. Still, Idaho native Ella replied to one such comment, and took a screenshot of it to share with the caption, “Stay positive.” The comment reads, “fetishizing an entire race of people and generalizing a WHOLE continent? Literally repulsive. Stop deleting comments rightfully calling you out on your racism and take some responsibility for yourself." Ella has replied to it with, "I am sorry you feel this way I don’t accept negativity in my life but I wish you all the [best]” A thread on Reddit started by u/mukhtar24 has comments mocking Ella’s response.
Fans joked that instead of addressing the core problem, or defending herself, Ella chose to claim that the fan was being “negative.” Some noted that Ella may have not really been “racist” but a few others recalled her being upset about her friend marrying a Thai man when she wasn’t even into anime like her. There have been discussions about Johnny having a “fetish” of some kind as well, which is why he could be dating Ella. Her stating that Johnny is into the “Western culture” with him posing in front of a bunch of guns in an accompanying photo may point towards this.
Plus, Johnny makes an odd comment about Ella in the previews for the upcoming episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. He says that Ella has a beautiful face but that she’s “kind of a little big.” He also claims that Ella is plus size from eating desserts, chocolates, and “of course meat” since “it’s America” she stays in. For now, her “Asian obsession” may hint at Ella and Johnny not ending up together. But he too might make Ella feel bad about herself by guilt-tripping her as Azan Tefou has done with Nicole Nafziger in previous seasons.
