A user on the thread recalls Darcey saying her father Mike Silva is Cabo Verdean. Cabo Verde is “a Portuguese speaking island off the northwest coast of Africa." Also known as Cape Verde, it’s comprised of ten islands. Praia, on the Santiago island, is the capital. ThisIsAfrica states that while most Cape Verdeans are creole, the island has people from across the globe, including immigrants from South America, Asia, and Europe. Thus, Cape Verde is a Sociedade mestiça (mestiça society in Portuguese), which means it is home to mixed-race people.
It’s said more Cape Verdeans live abroad than in Cape Verde itself today. The country’s official language is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole is the mother tongue of most inhabitants. Most Cabo Verdeans are Roman Catholic, but there are practicing Protestants. The culture is diverse and reflects its mixed West African and Portuguese roots. Cape Verdeans are known for their melancholic music called Morna, and Cachupa, a stew of hominy, beans, meat, and vegetables, is the national dish. Some notable personalities of Capo Verdean descent are Amber Rose, Chelsea Tavares, and the footballer Nani.
